My extremely expensive ,,GAMING'' laptop (Dell G5 15 5578), only has a hdmi port - i got an Acer Predator GN246HL for christmas, and i was excited to change my samsung monitor with half the screen with dead pixels, and i got this mon because it was cheap, had 144hz and looked good. I unboxed it today and fired it up, and i searched a bit and found out that you CANNOT run 144hz on a hdmi port, so i want to ask is it possible through a thunderbolt port, and is it possible to run more than 60hz on this sh*&% hdmi port?

Solution
Looked at the specs for your monitor and it seems it only does 144hrz over duallink dvi,but it seems that hdmi is indeed locked at 60hrz.

Seems that thunderbolt to dvi is your only option for 144hrz. Maybe something like this, google these your self as well, linked the first that came into view and it's not the cheapest. 😉 Would look for best results to something called active adapter,am not using this so am not sure that all these thunderbolt to dvi adapters will perform alike.

It's odd that it is limited to 60hz. Weird they did that. However a usbc thunderbolt 3 adapter to whatever desired connector will work.

Well the bad thing is that the thunderbolt to hdmi or any monitor port adapter costs around 90+ euro, which is extremely expensive for something like that, plus even my old hp laptop has a rgb-in port, lol ,,gaming computers''

According to this has your laptop a hdmi 2.0 interface which should be able to do 144hrz.
When you open the Nvidia config window what monitors does it show under "display"->"change resolution"?
Click the Acer if shown and see if you can select 144hrz there under "2 choose the resolution"" -> "refresh rate".

It shows me the acer monitor, yes but in refresh rate (the one in nvidia control panel, where you can make custom resolutions) i only see 60hz and when i try to make a custom resolution (1080p and 144) the monitor goes black untill i revert the changes, i tried with 120hz, 100hz , ven 70hz, its only 60hz...
Searching the stats from the site i bought it from, my laptop should have a hdmi 2.0 and a thunderbolt 3

Solution
Looked abit closer to the one i linked (adapter) and it says under specs it linkes to single link dvi which is not what you want, you want duallink . Sorry should have seen that before.
It also says it's mini displayport which i overlooked so i'm on a roll.:pfff: Will look further for something that is adequate.

Still just looking,but found this,
https://www.amazon.de/DisplayPort-Adapterkabel-Aluminiumgeh%C3%A4use-Kompatibel-Thunderbolt/dp/B01LY7DEQU/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1545494916&sr=8-4-fkmr0&keywords=usb+3.1+thunderbolt+to+dual+link+DVI-D
but that would still need for that active adapter and is a second adapter in the whole for which i can't say if it will impact output, means if it will give 144hrz.
Maybe together with this would it work, still pondering about that.

would make things abit cheaper if needing two adapters, but it does support dp 1.2 according to the specs at the bottom (which your laptop uses).
You would still need an extra dual link dvi cable in the end to connect it to the monitor.

Will look further and just throw some more options at you, although the above seems the most likely working combination i can think of that might work.

Well should probably best have suggested another monitor and return this one 😉, but a desktop pc would suffice too.😀

Still you should be carefull with picking a gpu since not all gpu's come with dvi output anymore.

Would have been nice to see if the two adapters together would have worked. Not that i want to pursuade you to try it.:)

Lol, i might get them around april, just because im getting interested in what you are saying 😉
(Just because its amazon if both are 30 dollars, because of shipping, even if its free, the ,,duty'' (tax you get when getting items that arent in your country), it will be around 40-50 dollars, but still interesting to try
