I can barely run Thief at Normal preset using FX8350 and GTX770

So my question is: How is this possible?

There seems to be a VERY small difference in FPS between Normal and Very high, so once again: What!?

This setup SHOULD be able to run it at very high with no problems.

And yes, I have the latest drivers and I have an aggressive fan curve and have OC'd my GTX770 a bit.

Sorry about the swearing previously. I was a bit annoyed. :)

Solution
Have you tried doing a clean install of your Nvidia drivers?
If so, Check the clock speeds of your graphics card. It sounds like your GPU isn't ramping up to 100% clock speed if you're still getting the same performance.

No, this does not mean the GTX 660 can do the same as the 770, because it can't. It just means there's a problem somewhere and we have to fix it. :)

could be the game doesnt like the gpu to be oc'd. it seems to be a common theme with the latest games. they run well on stock settings but as soon as you oc they crumple perfomance to below what you were getting with stock setting.

plz remember that this site is used by teens so plz keep your language age appropriate.

I tried it first at stock speeds.
Then OC'd and that didn't seem to make any difference.

I was just about to look into OC'ing my CPU, but I hear that my MB isn't a very good one for OC'ing this CPU.
I have the Asrock 970 Extreme4.

I'll try a clean install now...

a clean install helped! Thanks! Didn't fix it but made it better.
Now I can play it just barely at very high with tessalation and SSAA turned off (among some random lag, when entering a new area there's lag for like 10-20 seconds), which is still less than what this card should be able to do. Unless it's the CPU's fault...

I don't even have everything maxed and I have unbearable lag for like 15 seconds when I enter a new area. Also, some random lag spikes and I have tessalation and SSAA off and texture re-sampling at default.

I have no idea what kind of FPS (I would guess about 30-40) I get when it's not lagging because the EVGA's Rivatunerserver's on screen display doesn't work in Thief and some other games.

I'll try FRAPS.
Vsync is on double-buffer, but I tried to turn it off earlier and it didn't help. Though that was before I did a clean install of my drivers (that helped the performance but not as much as i was hoping) so I guess i could try again when I have time.

Okay it would seem to stay at around 60FPS when it's not lagging, but it still lags at times and when it does it can take from 2 to like 30 seconds for it to stop.

It's playable now, but the annoying lag spikes are a pain :C

Well that's not your limiting factor of performance at all then...

There seems to be reports it has to do with the 64-bit edition of Thief. There seems to be some suggestions to tricking the game into running it in 32-bit mode.
a) Go to: \SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Thief\Binaries
b) RENAME the "Win64" folder to whatever you want e.g. "Win64Backup"
c) COPY the "Win32" folder, so it should be "Win32 - Copy"
d) RENAME the "Win32 - Copy" folder to "Win64"
e) RESTART Steam
... now steam will use the 32bit Version of Thief.

Some people have reported fairly considerable improvement in stuttering after trying this, even after the most recent patch.

Or could I just check the "run in 32bit mode" box in the game's options?

Sounds like hardware issues?

I play thief alot, also with a gtx 770, it gets to 77c at times, so watch that. Thief makes my gpu hot. Im in progress of cooling it down more.

But I can run it at very high, anti aliasing on, everything ok. Double, triple buffer. The games playable still.
Albeit to hot so I don't run on very high. Also when I move I see a purpleish blur, on brown colors for example. I'm not a hardcore gamer but it seems more exclusive to thief.

Try another copy of thief, theres a patch that's been released.

Also, I run mine 64x
I think I'll try 32x and see if the purple blurple goes away.

You have a 970 chipset, that's only pci 2.0 I believe.
Although I think that's still plenty of bandwidth maybe you're throttling somewhere.
A 990 board would be a good upgrade for you with that cpu/gpu
Im running an I5 4570k stock clock, sometimes mild oc. My gtx 770 is a superclock version at 1111mhz, but I turn it down, or up, seems to have little difference for me

Id try another copy/patch thief first and foremost.
Then go from there and try to ruleout hardware issues.
Psu? You should have a decent one. That card plus your cpu..id guess 750w
