I Cannot Get Both of my Monitors to Work at the Same Time?

Hello All,

I recently found an old CRT monitor in my attic, and with because I had some free time, I decided to use it as my second monitor, mostly for keeping a constant watch on fan speeds and other statistics. Anyways, my VGA card, a MSI Radeon HD5450, has one VGA port, one DVI port, and one HDMI port. Since I am already using the VGA port for my Dell E176 monitor (a fairly old flat-screen monitor), I purchased an adapter to plug a VGA cord into the HDMI slot (well, not directly, through the adapter). The adapter was called the "Cable Matters® Gold-Plated Active HDMI to VGA Adapter (Male to Female) with 3 Ft Micro USB Cable - Black" - that title was copied directly from Amazon.com, the place where I bought it.

When I first plugged it in, I was not using the USB cord for extra power, but it still allowed both monitors to work in the "extended display" fashion. However, every minute or so, when I would close out of a window or open a new program, the monitor with the adapter shut off. I tinkered around a bit, until I thought it was better, but when I right clicked on my desktop and went to "Screen Resolutions" like I normally do, only one monitor showed up. Every once-in-a-while I would get both displays to show up, but when I applied the extended display setting, one lost connection and the other was turned on and had my desktop background, but with no shortcuts or applications on it. I then plugged in the USB power adapter, but it was no help. How can I connect both monitors to have a dual monitor setup?

Thank you for reading my long-winded question,

John

Unfortunately, I checked the VGA card box and did not find the adapter you spoke of. Do you have any other idea of how I could get my monitors to work?

Thanks,

John
