Im running a Lenovo desktop. I upgraded an older HDD by cloning it using Macrium Reflect Free edition. The clone showed succesfull. I then installed a new SSD drive and a clean Windows 10 Pro install on the SSD. Once that was installed I reinstalled the cloned drive. The clone was from my original C:drive that had the previous OS (W10 Home) and a ton of data. (950GB).

So, I installed only new SSD, nstalled fresh W10 Pro. All running well. Then I installed the cloned drive.

The drive shows up in explorer and also in disk management, but I'm missing all the files I want. MY DOCUMENTS, MY PICTURES, etc. I see windows folders and other system files, plus a few data folders, many empty. Nothing that I expected under my user file.
I'm not sure whatto do. Does this have to do with permissions? Under previous OS, I had an admin account with PW and a General user account (no PW) that was used mainly and saved all the data I now need.

Any help and advice on how to get access to those files would be greatly appreciated. Im almost ertain they are on the drive. It shows a lot more used data than the files showing in explorer and it was a successful clone.
Thanks!

Yes, this is absolutely a permissions issue.

The original account, eith on the original drive or the clone recipient...is a whole different user.
You new user in the new install cannot see those folders and files.

You need to delve into "Take Ownership":

One more question please..
It looks like taking ownership requires Administrator privilege .i just installed Windows .did that give me automatically Administrator privileges? i have not created additional Accounts.

How can I tell if I already have administrator rights?

Thanks again

The first account you created during the OS install should have admin rights.

Hi guys. This is an old thread but I'm hoping someone can help me.

My laptop won't boot - stop code critical process died. I didn't get a chance to back up and it wouldn't let me enter even in safe mode to do that. I took it to a repair center where they booted it to an external Windows 10, cloned the hard drive and backed it up to an external hard drive. They said it had no ptoblems.

Before I restore my laptop, I plugged in my hard drive into a friend's laptop to make sure everything is in there. I could see OS files and folders such as Documents, Download, Music, etc but these were all empty. No personal files.

I think this is also a permission issue but what do I do next? Are all the files technically there but I just need to take ownership? Or does my laptop hard drive need to be cloned again with different instructions? I would appreciate any advice as I'm desperate to get these files back.

Thank you
Zahab
