Something has happened and I cannot enable Audomatic Updates. I go to the
control in Control Panel, and Turn Off Automatic Updates is selected, but
everything is grayed out, and I cannot select Automatic. The service is
started.

It may or may not be related, but my Scheduled updates for MacAfee Virurscan
also are not working.

In both cases, I can manually update sucesfully.

Thanks for any insight you may have.

Please go through malware removal steps here:

Since your McAfee's virus definitions are not current, I would start by
scanning with Sysclean (instructions on the website). You will probably
need to get all tools/updates from a different, known-clean machine
with Internet access and a cd burner (or have a usb thumbdrive with
enough capacity to transfer the files.
