I am trying to install windows vista via disc on my laptop however it gets the the part we're it says completing installation but after a couple of hours the screen turns black and nothing happens

The laptop is an hp pavilion dv7 and I'm trying to install vista he basic

why do you want to install a old, slow, bad and unsupported by half world os?

about hardware, have you verified that the hard disk is still good to be used? a dv7 is a 8 years old laptop now that is a no go hard disk to me

also, you are using the internal optical drive of that laptop, it might be failing, get a external optical drive and try again

do you have the original windows vista instalaltion dvd? a bad copy can give you problems reading files so it will be there forever

try to make a usb installer of it

I'm only installing vista because I can't afford a new OS and I'm using a pny cs900 ssd because the original one broke but I will consider using an external optical drive

You are going to have problems because you are installing a new SSD and don't have drivers for your MB installed first. Get the drivers from the HP support site, install them, then try installing the OS..

If you are using a Dvd disk to install windows Vista.

Take a look at the state of the disk on the side the laser reads the information from the disk.
Any large scratches or marks on the Dvd disk it`s self can and will create incorrect or slight reading of the Data for the windows vista install process.

I suggest what you do if you have a valid windows licence key for Vista.
And a Dvd burning drive, is to download the version of vista you have in a ISO format off the internet.
And use Power ISO to create a new Record able dvd version of the vista dvd install disk.

Or if you have a Usb flash drive of at least 8 Gb in size, that you download an ISO version of windows Vista os you require, the bit version 32bit or x64.
And the same version as your disk is of vista be it home edition or Ultimate.

Then use Rufus ISO to usb boot able disk of the vista os install.

It is really easy to create a Usb boot able Os install using the Rufus USB tool Carl.
If you use a dvd record able disk when you burn the Iso image of windows Vista to the disk, burn it at a x4 speed.
To avoid any write errors when the disk is burning the ISO image to disk.

But this is the first time anything is being installed on it so you can't do anything other than try and install windows

If you have all the drivers on a DVD or USB, try booting to that media. If successful, then use the setup or menu to install the required drivers..

Hi, have you thought of trying to boot from an Ubuntu boot disk or usb,, you could see whether this can see the disk, also try to format the disk if you can see it?

Also worth trying is the AHCI mode in the laptop bios, as well as ensure that it has the latest version.
