My hard drive was working fine till yesterday and now suddenly it won't read. I have checked in the device manager and there I can see my hard drive whenever I plugged it. But in the my computer I can't see the drive. I have tried updating the driver, uninstalling the device, USB controller etc. but that didn't work. I have checked the drive in other computer win 8.0, 8.1 and 7. The only message I get is USB disk not recognized. Please can somebody suggest me any solutions. Many Thanks.

It sounds like the drive's not in a very good condition. 🙁
The BIOS part is to check out if the drive is recognized there, because if it isn't - there's little to no chance that it would be recognized by the OS. Unfortunately if the drive is shown as not initialized there's a great chance that it won't be recognized by data recovery software as well, but you could still try some of the options provided in this thread and hopefully prove me wrong: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html. You could also try to access the HDD via Linux Live CD/USB (this is basically a portable, freeware, bootable version of Linux) and hope that it would recognize the drive properly so that you can get to your files. And the...
Hey there, Tek Raj Bhatt.

Have you checked if the drive is recognized in Disk Management? Here's how to access it: How to access Disk Management in Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 to manage hard drives
Other than that I'd recommend that you try the drive with a different USB cable (not longer than 12") and different USB ports (2.0 and 3.0) to see if the same thing happens. Do you want to recover any data from that drive? If not I'd recommend that you download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool and try to test the drive with it, to see what's the situation with the HDD.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Hi Boogieman,

Thanks for the answer. Yes, I have tried with other USB cable (same transcend 25H3 HDD) all the ports 2.0, 3.0, desktop, laptop, win 7, 8 all those. For once I got the drive in disk management listed as uninitialized. But after that I can't get my hard drive listed in disk management. Yes I want to retrieve data. I went through other posts here in this website and came to know that I can retrieve data even if the drive is listed as uninitialised drive in disk management. I am not sure if that works but I can't get my hard drive in disk management. Does BIOS have anything to do with this. people were frequently mentioning that in other posts. Please help.

And the best and most reliable data recovery option - is a professional solution, such as a data recovery company.
There is one more thing which you could try, but this is not recommended and should be done only as a last resort. I'm talking about taking the drive out of its enclosure and connecting it to your computer internally via a SATA connection. Note that this would only work if the issues you are experiencing are due to a faulty/failed external enclosure and this would also void the warranty of the HDD.

Good luck!
