i need a real expert for this one. i've had a couple people look at it and we are all stumped.

i have a new pc build comprised of a amd ryzen 5 1600, gigabyte ga-ab350 gaming 3 mobo, corsair 650 watt psu, 16 gigs of evga ram, and an evga ftx 1060 gpu. it was all working properly until one day i restarted it and got a no post. after tinkering with it for a while, the solution seemed to be just switching the pcie power cable to the other slot on the modular psu. it worked for about a day more before i again got no posts after a restart. the graphics card had a small overclock of about +100 MHz. i have tried resetting the cmos each step along the way.

here is where it gets confusing. if i plug my graphics card into my roommates pc, it will start just fine, if i plug my roommates graphics card into my pc, mine starts just fine. his graphics card works in his pc, but mine doesn't work in mine. i thought it might be the psu, but i tried swapping his psu to my pc and still got no post. the only big difference between his gpu and mine is that his has 2 6 pin power plug, and mine only has one 6 pin power plug.

-i should add. my roommates gpu is a xfx radeon hd 6950-

so far my best guess is that my graphics card just doesn't like my pc. if anyone here can help me i would really appreciate it.

-another update, i have checked both the pcie power plugs for continuity with a miltimeter. they all are showing ~12 volts for each pin. i dont have a way to test the power outputs though-

So your GPU works in his PC?

But if you use his PSU in your PC your GPU doesn't work?

But his GPU works in your PC?

What are the PSU's in question?

Having to change the PCIe connection on your PSU is not a good sign and then it stopped working again.

my psu is a corsair cx 650m 650 watt, his psu is an "xtreame gear 850 watt"

And you had to switch the PCIe connection on your PSU and your GPU worked and then stropped again?

yes. but it only worked for about a day. also, my mobo shows an error with the VGA when i am getting the no post, if that could help.

So bottom line is:

Your GPU works in his machine.

So we know the GPU is good.

Have you tried your PSU is his machine?

i have not tried that, but i will start on it now and update when i am done

Just trying to marrow things down since you have access to another machine.

i think i have figured it out. i believe the problem is the pcie 3.0 X16 slot in my mobo. using the two machines i figured out the gpu and psu are both fully functional. if i move my gpu to the pcie 3.0X 4 slot( the one used for crossfire or SLI), my computer works just fine. so the pcie X16 slot(main gpu slot) doesnt work with pcie 3.0(my gpu), but does work with pcie 2.1(roommates GPU). this doesn't explain everything weird that has happened and i don't know if it is even possible, but it is the best that i can come up with. if someone out there can confirm that this makes sense i would appreciate it, otherwise i will just assume that is the case.

the board just has 4 leds that light up depending on what is wrong. in my case when there is no post the VGA led is lit. there is also boot, cpu, and dram leds
