I just bought the red devil rx480 edition am coming from a 2gb ddr5 xfx, but anyways after installing the card the performance is really bad i mean low fps in the teens and i cant get higher than 30fps at max on all games. I reinstalled drivers, wiped my operating system clean multiple times am stressed out wondering wtf is happening. The card is huge and i need a new case but i made it fit. My setup is:
Msi 970 gaming board
Sentei 720watt psu
Kingston hyper fury x 8gb ddr3 x 2
WD westgate digital blue 500gb hardrive
Fx 8320 cpu.
I did a furmark test it ran good the numbers looked ok wattman numbers looked ok too but as soon as i ran the games alot of stutter and low fps.
Last night i barrrowed my friends rig he is running a old gigabyte board,(not sure of the version but its nothing new) fx6300 cpu, sentie psu 750watt, same ram as me i think, i put my card in to test it and walla!! It ran beautifully in his rig am talking over 60fps in games like witcher 3 and gta v. One thing though his rig is much more ventilated than mine slightly but even dou i need a new case i dont think the performance should be this horrible.i also took out his hard rive put it in my rig just for testing and the performance was the same so i am thinking it has to do with my setup? But i did alot of reseach and the setup i have should be ok. My older 2gb ddr5 ran great. Its bin days and its stressing me out i have all the new games and i cant enjoy them. Also forgot to mention that when i put my card in my friends rig i coud actually hear the card like its actually doing something meaning it was a bit loud. In my rig its like the card was asleep. I desperately need to fix this am wondering what to do.

Solution
Guys i finally figured it out its my motherboard its over heating i swapped out all my parts and put it on my friends gigabyte board and it worked like a charm. Thank u guys so much question dou cud the fact that my case needs replacing cud be the problem why its over heating?

Other cause of stutter can be ram, but as said before heat problems are the biggest cause.

If your card sounds like its asleep then the fans arent going very well. In your graphic cards driver program you will be able to look at both temperature and fan settings with an option to force the fans to run at a higher rpm. If they look right then move on and use a program like Hwmonitor to check the temps of all of your computer. Anything over 60C is questionable.

the fx 8320 temperature is 28'c max with game running. whats a normal fan speed rpm cause mine seems very slow even looking at while gaming seems very slow and yeah last year I put this processor in

the rpm can be low and still be okay as long as the temperatures aren't very high. Percentage wise I'd say between 30 and 60% of fan speed is normal during your average game.

+Damianhype On your motherboard, in addition to the 24-pin ATX main power connector, you must also connect the power supply to the 8-pin ATX 12V power connector as well. Without this, the graphic card's PCIe slot won't supply enough power to run this graphics card properly. This would explain why your GPU performance and CPU temps are so low.

! caution: The placement of the 8-pin power connector is poor on the MSI 970 Gaming motherboard, so be sure this cable is routed in your case precisely how you want it to be, because it's challenging to remove it once plugged in.

rcald2000 Are u saying the other 8pin pin connector that comes with the power supply is suppose to connect to the board as well? So its 3 connections? The24pin atx connector and one of the 8pins go to the board and the other goes to the power supply?

No, just two connections. One 24 pin and one 8 pin. If you already have the 8 pin PCIe cable connected to both power supply and the motherboard, then it's fine, and my hunch is wrong. If you're not sure, then simply take a photo of your motherboard, upload to imgur and share the link here.

There's an 8pin (4+4) cpu power cable that should be labeled as such. That needs to be plugged into the motherboard, and the cables labeled PCI-E have to be plugged into the GPU.

Ok when i get home i will see if i missed a connection guys will be bak in a few hours to keep u guys posted but if i can remember correctly i only have 2 connections from the power supply connected the atx 24pin and one 8pin that goes to the card. There is another 8pin pin hanging out am wondering if thats the one u guys are talking. I thought that one was for the crossfire support?

Ok guys am gonna do the checks later on to be sure as i am not. And also if all the connections are ok i plan to swap out my parts with my friends 1 by 1 and test it to see if i can find the problem dont know why i didn't do that last night in addition to just the video card swap.

If you get to the point where you have to swap out parts, i'd suggest starting with the power supply.

Motherboard overheating: I've honestly never heard of this before. I've heard of the motherboard VRM or Northbridge overheating and causing the system to reboot. But I've never heard of specific motherboard components preventing full GPU performance due to heat. Out of curiosity, did you try my suggestion of connecting the 8 pin connector on your motherboard to the power supply?

Rcald2000 yes everything was connected. The card got hot the minute i turn the pc on with the msi board there gotta be some compatibility issues cuz the board and my friends r9 280x works great am thinking its either compatability or my case is the problem my case is really bad bought it years ago when games only requires 512 ram to play them lol yeah its that old. Am gonna get the carbide spec 3 next month and do another swap out to see if it was my case that was causing the heat problems
