I did not screw my power supply to my case. Is that okay?

Hey there. I just replaced my old casing by a new one. The old one was old, rusty and I had no covers for it. Plus it was making some contact causing random restarts of my computer.

Anyway, the old casing has a top fitting PSU compartment where as the new one it is a bottom fitting. I thought this would be no problem but turns out that my 4pin 12v cable that goes to the motherboard is too short.

What I did as a temporary solution is lift the power supply a bit with two old Blu Ray boxes and leave the PSU unscrewed and sitting there.

Is it a risky thing to do and knowing that it is temporary, can I do some mild gaming on it while I wait for the new PSU?

Also, I saw extensions like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-4-Pin-ATX-12V-P4-Male-to-Female-CPU-Power-Supply-Extension-Cable-Adapter-8-/262418962618?hash=item3d196398ba:g:9NIAAOSwmtJXXZx2, would they work fine or will they degrade the power to the motherboard?

Not screwing your PSU when bottom mounted is not the end of the world. Ideally it would be secure, but provided it's pretty snug & you don't move the computer around, it shouldn't cause any major problems.

One thing though, if you're standing your PSU on top of bluray cases, are you blocking the intake fan on the PSU? That's where I see your major issues.

If your PSU (and case) were designed for top mounted use, I'm assuming that PSU is pretty old at this point? It's likely going to be a good idea to replace that now - which would also solve the length of the 4pin cable problem.

The adapter/extension should work fine. I can't envisage any power degration by using it.

You are right. I just checked those boxes and replaced them with a less wide box. A slight part of the PSU intake/exhaust is covered but it is still better than with the blu ray boxes. The PSU is quite old, in fact one of the power cables feeding power to one of my hard disks melted on the hard disk connector. I should replace it anyway. I just have to get a new hard disk and clone it before changing the power supply because if I remove it now, it'll be hell to put it back and there's no guarantee it'll work after that.

Thank you very much for your answer. I was hoping it would not be a big issue as the simple fact of buying this casing makes me run on fumes until the end of the month.

Kudos to you!
