I really need to know the answer for educational purposes. I do not have a router I have an ordinary modem that is wired from our local cable company. So do I need to port forward anything, when the mission I'm on states that I need to port forward my "wireless router". Am I good with what I have, as in no need to port forward my modem? I'm new to this so bare long with me... If need to port forward my modem, please tell me how?

If you have only a modem, you can connect only one PC to it. This PC will have real (accessible from outside) IP address, so no portwarding is neccessary (or possible). This PC will be also subject to all known and unknown attacks, so properly comfigured firewall is a must.

However, many ISP-provided "modems" are actually a modem and router, without a switch. Check the IP address you got - if it starts with 192.168.xxx.xxx, or 10.x.x.x, you have a router.
