I Don’t Want Windows 8/Windows 8.1 to Automatically Download/Use Device Drivers and Icons

By default Windows 8/Windows 8.1 is configured to automatically download and use the device drivers and their appropriate icons every time the computer is connected to an active Internet connection, and the OS detects the available updates. In home environments, if you have decent Internet bandwidth, this configuration is quite suitable as it does not require any manual intervention to keep your system updated.

On the other hand, if you have slow Internet bandwidth or limited Internet connection, you might want to disable this feature in order to avoid unnecessary and overconsumption of the bandwidth.

Also, if there are multiple PCs at your home that share a single Internet connection, with the default configuration, all the PCs would automatically download the updates and icons automatically. This might remarkably reduce the overall Internet speed.

In order to avoid the above situations, you can disable the automatic downloading and installing of the device drivers and the icons by following the instructions below:

■Log on to Windows 8/Windows 8.1 from the regular account.
■Once logged on, click the Desktop tile.
■On the desktop screen, click the File Explorer icon from the taskbar.
■On the opened This PC window, ensure that the Computer tab in the ribbon.
■Click the System properties button from the System category.
