Hi guys

I played Crysis 3 recently, and I had 0 problems with lag ( I really didn't notice anything).

Then I downloaded Fraps, and I discovered I was "only" getting 30-45 FPS in game( More inside a building, less on rare occasions).

The thing is I never noticed a thing when playing. Is there something wrong with my eyes? Why the obsession with 60 FPS?

The sensitivity to frame rates will depend on the users.

Some users notice it as not as smooth under a certain fps(not always 60).

Other users are sensitive to the actual drop from one rate to another, say 60 down to 30-40.

Many users will adjust to the frame rate they are playing. As an example, If I set a games fps cap to lets say 30 it will fell quite noticeably un-smooth at first but after playing for a while, I personally become more used to it to the point of it not bugging me. Sure it is not as smooth, but it is still fully playable.

You will get 100's of answers as to why user A can not stand below XX or XXX number of fps. Some users get spoiled. When I started gaming, no way I was getting 60fps, but as you get used to the...
The "obsession" with 60 FPS is so that when drops in FPS do occur, they are, as you point out, fairly unnoticeable. However, if you're generally running between 30 and 40 FPS and you hit a spot where the frame rate drops off, you could be looking at rates in the lower 20s which is fairly noticeable.

Well, most people are running 60hz monitors, and the best anything can look on a monitor refreshing 60 times a second is.....60 frames a second. So we're just trying to get the best performance possible out of what we have, less still looks fine, but why not get the most out of your monitor/game possible?

A very good point. Since until recently I was playing fairly recent games on an HD 4870, I was probably very used to low frame rates 😛.

It was also something that bugged me about getting an SSD. I never really had much trouble accessing something off my old hard drive (although really old and slow ones get to me). But I feel like SSD's are going to spoil my experience with other PC's eventually, instead of improving my current experience.

I guess it's the human condition, always wanting more :/.

It is and is not. I am sure the experience is too up-playable to some users.

I also apply frame rate caps to games that are running WAY too fast(if vsync is not an option for said game). Still get page tearing, but why run the card harder for nothing.

I mean I sometimes use frame rate caps on my media center if I want to keep it more cool. It feels strange at first, but after a bit of time, I do adjust to it. Switching it off almost makes the games feel like they are running a bit fast.

Strange effects.
