I dont have the little windows icon on the taskbar to upgrade?

i dont have a pirated version of windows... i have a legit copy of windows 8.1, any help is appreciated

Download the ISO from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

Burn it to a USB or DVD using this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

Run 'setup.exe' from the drive, and follow the prompts. Don't tick auto download updates and don't do a clean install on the first try. You need to "update" the first time, then install clean afterwards using the same media if you wish.

The method provided by darkbreeze is good but if u want the icon and turn on the background downloading then go to windows update select check for updates and if u can do all the updates otherwise do the following one KB3035583 KB2976978
To start the background downloading u need to a update which will come after reserving using the icon

just the problem is (which is shown in my other thread) is that whenever i goto the windows update window, the window just freezes or hangs :/

Half the systems out there are still not showing that the download is ready for them anway. I'd just do the ISO and install, choosing the "keep my current files, folder and settings" option so it does the upgrade rather than the clean install. Following that, you can do a clean install if you wish but it's not strictly necessary. My main system is currently running the upgrade only and it's doing just fine. Don't forget, if you do the upgrade, to run disk cleanup and choose the "cleanup system files" option, and check "remove previous windows installations" so it will delete the backup of the old OS listed as windows.old in your root drive. If you want to retain the option to downgrade back to 7, which isn't working well using the automatic method for most people anyway, don't delete the Windows.old folder.

I think upgrading followed by a clean install, and future installations can all be clean installs, you only need to perform the upgrade one time, is the better option.

when i tried to install from iso i get the error message 80080005 and if i install from an iso from a different computer it says i have to put in a product key

Did you download your installation ISO from the link I posted above and then create the media using the tool at the second link? If not, or if you used ANY other method to obtain your ISO, then that is likely your issue. Do not create media using the media creation tool. like ive said before, if i use the media to generate an iso i get error 80080005

oh and also i ran a troubleshooter for it and it said that i needed to install uppdate kb2976978 but when i tried to from the microsoft website it also gave me an error message

Try all of the following, especially checking the windows services settings for any of those listed being disabled.


Method 1: You may run Windows Update troubleshooter and then check using the Windows Update troubleshooter in Windows 7.

Method 3: You may try to manually start Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Cryptographic service.

a. Click Start, type services.msc in start search and press enter.

b. In services window scroll down to Windows Update Service.

c. Right click on the service and click on Properties.

d. Make sure the Startup type is set to Automatic and Service Status is started.

e. Click Apply and ok.

You may repeat the above steps for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Cryptographic service.



Method 4: You may also try performing a SFC scan on the computer which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.
