I enjoy reading these coin op groups. I even try to help where I can. I
have met and helped and have been helped by many people over the years of
arcade and pinball collecting. Never have I had the unique experience as
shown below. Some people expect everything for nothing. I welcome any
feedback on the following dialogue below. Start at the very bottom and work
your way up. Then reply to this thread with your thoughts on the subject.
I have replaced his name and email address with "crazy guy" because I don't
mean any harm to him, just wanted to vent. What do you think?

__________

My final reply:

You might consider being less of a pain in the ass. You whined about
needing a drive, I offered you a new drive, imaged for $150 with a money
back guarantee. Then you baulked at the price and asked how to do it
yourself and I told you. Then you complained that you couldn't find the
..CHD file on the Internet. Then found the CHD file but you complained about
having a friggin' dial up internet connection and are surprised that you can't
successfully download a huge compilation of RAR files (82 you said). Then I
suggested you buy a MAME ROM collection off the internet. Then you said you
don't have a DVD drive. I told you that a reasonable price to pay is $30
for a DVD drive and $20 for the mame collection and that is too much. Do me
a favor and quit discussing this with me. You are an absolute waste of my
time. I don't mind helping people but Jesus man, WTF?

Yeah, but for $30 for the drive, plus $20 for the DVD, that is $50. Then,
the HD may not even work. I am better off to just buy the HD already
programmed. I don't know, I guess I'll have to decide what to do.

I don't have a DVD drive, and my CD drive only works about half of the
time. I found a site with the file I need, but it is broken down into 82
..rar
files. I only have dial up, so it will an eternity to download all of
the files. Oh well, I guess I have two options. Buy a drive or make my own.
I am pretty determined to try and make my own, even if it means days of
downloading files.

Search google for MAME DVDS and send somebody $20 for the entire set.
That is how I got mine. Good luck.

Ok, well you owe me some props on the group for this one:

http://tinyurl.com/bv7rk

I covered this entire process in December 2004. It probably works
with all midway hard drive games although it doens't work with all the
newer
touchscreens since the shitty Maxtor drives they use have firmware that
the
game checks for. 🙁

Good luck.

TigerDirect has a few decent new HDs in the $40 price range. I
also have a new (extra) HD for Area51/Max Force. I could probably erase
that
drive and use it. I am not challenging your price. I think it is fair.
By
the time you buy the hard drive, pay shipping, take the time to program
it,
package it up and ship it to me, that doesn't leave much room for
compensation
for your time. I think I am going to try to use the drive I have. I am
pretty
good with video games, pinballs and electronics, but I am lacking a little
when it comes to computers. Maybe you could try to explain to me how to
do
this myself. I would really appreciate it. I am sure if someone points
me in the right direction, I can handle it. If you don't have time to help
me out, maybe you know of a link to a site with the info I need? Again, I
will really appreciate any help you can give me.

Thank you.

Wow, a new hard drive (40 gig is $65) you must have gotten a used
drive from somebody. I bet someone used some 4 gig 6 year old drive at
that
price!

You can actually do this yourself if you can get the CHD
file for that game on the Internet. I had to do this for my san francisco
rush the rock.
I have the Mame CHD file for Carnevil, which is required to
dump the raw data from that compressed file into a .RAW file. Then
you dump
it on a hard drive.

I can do this for a reasonable fee if you are interested.

LOL, that's funny. I think with the computer he has and his skills.
he'd better off buy a drive that's ready to go.
Either that or "crazy guy" needs to buy some computer parts,a mame set and
figure it out himself.

Haha.. sounds like he is just trying to wear you down thinking you will
tell him "Oh ok, I give up, send me a hard drive and I will do it for
free"

Thats crazy that he would complain about buying a DVD player.. If you
shop around you can find one on ebay for under $20! And I think there
might be one or two other uses for it, other than reading a mame HD
image..

Well, since you asked what we think.... There did seem to be a rapid rise in
ire from his last replay to your replay. He's a cheap, broke, whatever, but
you seemed to make a rapid leap from thinking he's a PITA to telling him
he's a PITA. Seems you let loose a little early and a little much but that's
just MHO.

I'd have just said 'Ok, well, good luck. Let me know if you decide you want
me to do it. You can Paypal to this email address. I gotta go back to work
now.' Then he's either on his own and you're done or he Paypals you $150.

You have every right to get annoyed. Plenty of us who know how to do it and
have the equipment know it takes time out of your day. Hell I can make a
copy of just about any drive with some time, but even when I am in a pinch
with a customer I will order from Happ controls for $199 plus shipping for a
drive already burned. Everything is on the web, tell Crazy to do his own
research and when he has 2 or 3 hours into reading and then another 2 or 3
wasted in trying to make his own and being unsuccesful he will see the light
of day. Do you think my drive copier was free, No I paid just over $500
shipped. How many drives do I have to copy and sell to recoup? Sorry I am
a little pissed from news on the pinball group right now but enough is
enough sometimes.

My $0.02 is to put as much distance as possible between you and him and do
*not* sell him anything! This will almost certainly fall into the "no good
deed goes unpunished" category before too long. ;-)

Think about the amount of time you've already put in just be being email
'support'-- and the amount of time he's expecting from you *for free*. Now
imagine what he's going to think you 'owe' him if he actually gives you
*money* for something... Trust me, any margin you have in that hard drive
price will be the hardest earned money of your life. ;-)

(He'll get the drive, drop it, plug it in backwards, get creative and change
the power supply wires around when it doesn't work, talk to an "expert"
friend that works in the computer department at Best Buy, tell you that his
friend says the drive was bad when he got it, demand a replacement, get the
replacement, fry it with the messed up wiring, damage the game board in the
process, tell you that your "bad" drive broke his game, consult his Best Buy
Buddy again who will agree that the drive killed his game with a virus,
demand a refund, demand a new game board, demand back child support and
whatever else he can think up...)

Just say 'no' and save yourself a lot of trouble! 🙂

For Mickey, apparently Mr Pinball (Wayne) now has the rights to williams
bally and has asked certain people who have been producing decals, overlays,
etc.. to stop, all of which are very nice products. Will he produce the
same products probably not and this really hurts the collectors or people in
the future who wish to have their pinball restored. Not sure what else we
are going to see stop being produced. Ramps?

Damn... I don't even know what to say...

If you can't afford $50 for a new DVD and rom (well, .chd) set you shouldn't
even be in this hobby.

I don't know what his angle is... is he really that cheap? Is he trying to
make you pitty him enough to do it for free? Does the guy not understand
basic math ($30 for a DVD, $20 for rom set, $40 for the HD = a working
carneival HD, a working DVD drive, and a full MAME set)... quite a bargain
if he's willing to do a bit of the work himself...

oh well... no understanding some people...

Ah, I just realized I called that my "final reply" although I did not send
that to him. I wanted to post this to gather my final thoughts on the
subject prior to jumping the gun. I think you are right, and I should just
offer what you and Rob suggested. That or offer him $50 for the boardset.
Anyway, sorry for the confusion on that one and thanks for the feedback on
this. Its been a long weekend for me!

Many thanks
Andy

Actual reply I just sent (disregard the "my final reply" in the previous
part of the thread below) I didn't realize I called that my actual response,
as I wanted to probe you guys before making a hasty decision.

Here is what I just emailed him instead:

Let me know if you change your mind. If you do and remit payment to this
email address, I should be able to get this out to you either tomorrow or
Wednesday. Otherwise, good luck to you but this is the best I can possibly
offer you given my current work / travel schedule and other circumstances.
If the boardset works, you might consider selling it to me or trading for
some other jamma boards I have that I am not using (I have an Ataax, Bad
Dudes, World Cup Soccer). Does it work all the way? How much do you want
for it?

Thanks,
Andy

That's funny Rob. In hindsight I can laugh about it (especially since I
have been here from Thursday through tonight). But I wasn't laughing when
the new server didn't want to talk nicely to all the other DC's in a timely
fashion and I had to edit all these friggin' LMHOST files and check WINS and
DNS everywhere. It is amazing how much more complicated a 6 office Windows
2000 VPN mesh network is than an NT4 network on frame relay. The price of
progress....

Nice talking with you.

Clay, my cold beer just came through my nose and shorted out my keyboard and
now I am suing you for $15, the cost of a replacement. Thanks for a great
laugh and and accurate portrayal of my biggest nightmare. You made my day.

Thanks guys.

If anyone makes it this far in the thread. Yes, I agree with your feelings.
In the begining I gave away so much stuff and so much time to people who
didn't appreciate it. They expected the $30.00 Pacman deal all of the time.
Now I just state a fair price and leave it at that. Someone was right when
they said just say "Thanks, if you change your mind I can help you for the
$150.00. let me know. Also Mike at ARCADESERVICES1@AOL.COM is the one
selling the Carnevil and other replacement drives for $65.00. I have bought
a number of drives from them and they have all worked fine. Mike is very
helpful and easy to work with.

Boy, Clay hit it on the head...You sell anything to this guy and he'll
be nagging you that he doesn't have a screwdriver to put it in with,
you'll email with a "Home Depot has em...for around 2 bucks...." and
you'll get a "WHAT? 2 bucks for a screwdriver?!?!?!?!"...

Yadda, yadda, yadda....

Burn bridge, burn! ;-)
Jeff (my 2 cents)
