I have a HP Simple SAVE 1TB external Hard, and i have been using this for more than 3 years. It was working absolutely fine. I never unplugged it from my desktop. It was attach to it. Today, I turn my computer on, and try to watching movie which i saved in my Hard Drive. Now I click on it nothing come up. It shows it is loading and after a while it say " you need to format the disk in drive before you can use it. Do you want to format it?". But i don't to format the hard drive because if i do i will lose all my important documents, files and my old stuffs.

I would really appreciate if someone could help me solve this with out formatting the hard drive.

Try plugging the external HDD into another computer to see if it gives the same error message

If still it does just follow the following steps :

1. Go to start button on windows.

2. Type "cmd" and right click on "cmd" and click "Run as Administrator"

3. You will see: C:\Windows\system32>

4. Now type : chkdsk <Your hard disk letter>: /f

For e.g If my hard disk is named "f" then just type
chkdsk f: /f

Try it out...I guess it will work.
