I fried my mobo

My PC crashed yesterday and when i went to reboot it, a system message said "CPU test failed". I tried the CPU in another computer and it worked fine so I went out and bought a new motherboard. When I finished installing it and booted up, my windows hardware monitor was giving a 15V reading for my PSU, which is obviously supposed to be 12V. So I immediately shutdown.

My question is, could that have been the reason my old motherboard died? and is it a problem directly related to the PSU (ie. I simply need to buy a new PSU?)

my old motherboard was ASUS P4PE, new one is ASUS P4P800SE. My PSU is 300W and peripheralls installed 1 hdd, 1 case fan, 1 CD ROM

Thanks in advance

That sucks.

Could be your PSU, your old motherboard could actually still be good, if your PSU was doing wierd things with your voltages, it could cause that CPU test failed message. (Assuming it didn't fry the motherboard)

I would take the PSU out, turn it on, and measure the voltages with a meter and make sure your motherboard is reading the voltages correctly, as sometimes they don't.

Anyways, at this point, if it were me, I would go buy a new PSU anyways, just in case, even if it is generic, it would make me feel a little safer than using the old one.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately i dont have a meter to test it with. My old ASUS is fried however, i forgot to mention I hooked up my old motherboard to a friends 350W Enermax (having the same idea as you did) and got the same CPU test failed. Is there anyway that the PSU could have been attached to the new motherboard in an improper fashion to give the 15V result?

thanks again

Well there is a way to wire a power supply to output 15 volts, but you would have to cut and solder wires, and I don't think you did that! The plugs on the end of the PSU can't be pluged in wrong. So there really isn't any way to do this wrong.

Is it a possibility to try your friends Enermax in your PC, and see if your board still reports 15 volts?

heya DiscoStu;

It sounds like the PSU is going bad, i wouldnt use it anymore, buy a new one.
When you go shopping for a new PSU look for the following.

1) Antec True Power 430w or better
2) Fortron Source 450w or better
