Sounds like you are using a 32bit operating system. 32 bit operating systems can only use 4GB of ram. To utilize more than that you will need to install a 64 bit operating system.

Other then that, what motherboard are you using? I think that most, if not all MOBOs need all identical sticks if using more then a single channel, and some can't use two different ones on one channel. It might not work this way since I know very little, but maybe if you are running 64 bit then your second channel is failing.

No you can mix sizes, brands, etc across channels (if they will play together), Intel has a feature called Flex Mode where it simply looks at the total amount of DRAM in each channel, so as an example here, could have 3 different 2GB sticks and a 4GB and if all played nice, would have 8GB running in dual channel with the odd 2GB left from the 4GB stick running in single channel

Easy peasy fix if you do have a 64-bit OS. Click start, type system configuration, go to boot, click advanced options, unselect maximum memory, and click ok and apply and reboot. Worked for me and now im rocking 40gb of hynix.
