yes the motherboard will support it. get a good quality PSU and upgrade your RAM to 8GB.

However, the Core i3 will give you a crazy bottleneck on that gtx 1060. You'll probably only get 50% of that GPUs performance on your old core i3.

i agree, the OP should consider getting a i5-650 or the i7-860 or 870 if he wants better performance.

i5 750 or 760 are the quad core i5s on that platform. The i5 650 would be little better than the i3 530 as it is also a dual core with hyperthreading, the only difference being the i5 650 is clocked a little higher and gets Turbo Boost.

Gtx 1060 will run. No need to worry. Make sure your psu has a pcie 6pin power connection.

I'm thinking more like Haswell/Skylake type CPUs. anything from the 1st gen is not going to prevent bottleneck.

If you what to play new titles at mid to high settings with over 60 fps 1080p I would definity upgrade your i3 to an i5 just because the games are getting more demanding. If you are just playing old games, stick with what you got.

The first generation processors are getting really long in the tooth, and even the i7s available on LGA 1156 could be a bottleneck for a GTX 1060 unless you can overclock your CPU. I would recommend saving up for a new system at this point. If you can find an i5 750 or 760 for cheap, maybe grab that as a stop gap measure and try to overclock it if your board allows you, an i7 8xx might be beneficial for some newer titles that actually scale beyond 4 cores and 4 threads. Don't spend more than 100 US Dollars on a CPU, they're not worth that much anymore. Avoid the i5 6xx series, they are effectively the same as your i3 just with better clockspeeds and Turbo Boost enabled.

Though the 1st gen is not that good compared to newer cpu's, maybe you can get a cheap 1st gen i7, they might suit you for now till you upgrade to a new mobo+cpu. The i7 will bottleneck but much less than the i3, especially in the games you mentioned, those are prettt cpu heavy.

you might even look into some xeons if you're running dedicated graphics.

your CPU will bottleneck any powerfull/current gen GPU.

You can get a RX 460 but dont spec too much from it.

unless you plan on upgrading your CPU in the future any current or last gen GPU would be a waste of money

yes it will help but no too much. for a while it will be an upgrade but you will need to upgrade your CPU+Motherboard at some point too.

You should save some money and get a current gen CPU and MoBo. 1st gen i3 and i5 are almost de same, you won't gain much performance with that upgrade.

It would be a waste to pair a GTX 1060 with a 1st gen Core i5 as it would be severely bottlenecked. If you wanted to get a 1st gen i5, you wouldn't want to spend $200+ on a gpu that would only be able to perform like a $150 (or less) gpu. Btw, what is your current gpu?

How much can you pick up an quad core for, and does you mobo allow overclocking... post the make&model?

I'm still rocking an i5 750, but I've OCd it from 2.67 to 4Ghz. It's not the best, but it holds up okay.

I do agree with others that you ideally want a a new mobo + CPU, but if you can pick up an i5 750/760, or an i7 860/870/880 on the cheap, and OC it a bit, then you might find it gives you enough to get you through until you can save up for a proper upgrade.

With a first gen i3 you are going to seriously struggle if you want to play GTA5, Witcher 3, etc.

What mobo and PSU do you have? Ideally you're gonna need to upgrade. But, as I suggested, you might be able to get playable fps out of an i5/i7 to tide you over until you can afford a proper upgrade, particularly if you can OC.

Everything the graphics card processes has to be acknowledged by the CPU. The graphics card can only process as much as the CPU can handle. Your CPU would be your bottleneck.[strike] I would say a 750 Ti would be all you would want to put with a 1st-gen i5, maybe an RX 460 or GTX 950. Anything more powerful than that and you would be wasting too much money on extra graphics processing power that won't be used due to CPU bottleneck.[/strike]

*Edit: The i5-760 would likely not be able to overclock on your motherboard, however it is a bit more powerful than I originally expected. It's about on par with an i3-4160, which would still be a bottleneck in some games. Keep in mind different games perform differently as they rely more or less on the CPU.
