I have 4gb of ram installed but my computer says I only have 1gb

I had 2gb of RAM installed, I then installed a 2GB ram chip and after the restart my computer says it now only has 1GB installed. Even when I uninstall the 2GB of RAM my computer doesn't go back to saying it has 2GB it still says it only has one.

Make sure you install properly. Ensure installing ram you hear the click sound so its seated properly.
Check if motherboard support your ram or your capacity. Lastly, it might be faulty test with other machines first.
