Look at all those caveats. If you already have the 8GB stick of RAM, go ahead and plug it in. If it works, you win. If not, give the RAM back to where ever you got it from, or sell it, and buy another 4GB stick of RAM (try to buy the same brand, speed, and timing). OR, sell your old 4GB stick of RAM and buy another 8GB stick that matches the one you have (again, try to get the same brand, speed and timing).

My experience is that mixing and matching RAM can produce unexpected results, from not booting at all, to mysterious shutdowns and restarts. Doing so seems to work ok about 50% of the time.

yes you can, you can jam another ddr4 RAM in the slot

while mixing ram is not suggested, it still worth the try
successful mixing ram adds another 8gb to your 4gb, resulting in 12gb RAM (their frequency matches to the lowest one)
failed mixing ram can lead to various problems (mostly no boot)
