I have a 965 Black edition that i overclocked with thermlatakes water 2.0 and a gigabyte 990fxa-ud3, managed to get it to 4.0Ghz while i had xfired 5770's and it ran great all the time, for at least a month(this ran over a year before i oc'd it). I just purchased and crossfired 2 xfx r9 280 dd and the computer crashed when i played ac4 but sometimes would just crash to desktop playing the cave. It sems the more graphic intense i played i ended up getting a memory dump, regardless it was doing this all the time but would vary on how long it took... I killed the OC on CPU and its been fine since. I originally had voltage at 1.5 but upped it to 1.65 while the 5770s were in and it was fine. I am debating on grabbing the fx-8350 but before i do all that i wonder did i have the voltage too high possibly? Ive kept it at its stock speed and just let games run on pause for a few hours while i left and came back fine... would love to be able to keep my investment on the cpu and oc it again.. any help greatly appreciated!!

had it at 2600mhz x20 for 4ghz also

hi there,

have you tried default settings on your machine.. reset everything to stock and see if the system runs as it is, if everything is fine then do you really need to overclock..

Hi,
Yes the system is back to stock and it has been fine since. I am curious to why that would happen with the newer cards. If i did OC it back is it going to give me an edge in games or is that a non issue since the 5770s are gone now? I have not really messed with it since i got my raid 0 with 2 ssd's, not just for performance but for more storage of steam games.. <--- I dont think it caused any conflicts that i can think of because they were like that with the 5770s. i have over 600gb of games, kinda nuts but the ones i dont care about fast access reside on a 2 tb

Does anyone know anything about these cpu's (965BE) and the r9 cards having issues when on an overclock? I probably dont need to overclock it, but i did notice fraps showing faster frames than before in some games, but reliant on the cpu is saints row 4, sniper elite 3, ac 3,4, and what about unity when it drops. And when star citizen drops i got that coming from the deal on the cards. I am guessing that its more gpu reliant but could be wrong

Yes it is at stock now and i also posted additional info. Games i will be running are payday2, borderlands2, portal 2, sniper elite 3, ac4 and unity when it drops, as well as star citizen when it drops also.
I am curious if a cpu overclock will help me or if stock run is ok or should i get the fx-8350 down the road with the new cards. I am going to upgrade the memory to 32gb when i can afford to add that as well.

Yes the PSU is brand new, it arrived the same time the r9 cards did. I decided to go with the hx 850 because the total power that the 2 r9's would use together would not cause a problem, and the ssd's draw barely any power. The only concerns i had with more power consumption were the thermaltake water 2.0, 2tb mechanical, and optical combined. Plus the corsair PSU had all the plugs plus needed to equip this beast.

Ok so if I up my cpu voltage from 1.65 where would be a good spot, the nb as far as i can tell on this bios is controlled by the multiplier.. unless i am missing an option, or i didnt enable it. Thanks for the feedback, I thought i was very close but when i added the 2 r9 280's it did not like my overclock and i couldnt figure out why.

The 965BE can be a finicky overclocker it does not overclock well with too fast of memory speed, even though it is not that old it is still old school regarding memory speed, you should be multiplier overclocking at 1066mhz or 1333mhz, so what memory speed are you actually running?

And what are your load temperatures?

This guide is old it was originally written back in 2010 and re-posted from requests to do so, but the 965BE was one of the CPUs used to write it, see if it will help you reach a solid 24/7 stable overclock?

If my guide is too simple for you use Dolks guide, and read over, "The Heat Wall", section as he is dead on the money there.

The processor has unlocked clock multiplier

For a 4ghz overclock IMO your CPU voltage is too high, however depending on what memory speed you're running it may be necessary?

Your motherboard runs DDR3 memory so you should be running 1333mhz speed memory, the 965BE needs a good solid memory foundation to overclock from, it can get unstable very fast as the multiplier and CPU voltage is increased running memory speed past 1333mhz.

Thank you for the links, I will check them out and see if i can get it back up to 4ghz as it seems to be the sweet spot according to the research i have done on it. My current memory is 1333, and i did not mess with upping its speed, I was considering getting 1866 mhz memory later down the road but that is one thing i did not alter. I only adjusted the cpu vcore voltage to 1.5 then decided i wanted to goto 1.65 as i saw on some other threads that upping it from 1.5 can help. I then used the multiplier to x20 to achieve 2600mhz which brought me to 4ghz overclock. I am fairly new to this as well, but when i was working on my overclock I searched for my board and my processor specifically, and was using others as a template to work with. This is another reason why i was wondering if i had my voltage set too high as i did not want to kill it. This setup has been running since march of 2013, and i recently overclocked the cpu to try and get more power out of it because of my 8gb of 1333 memory and the low end 5770s i had at the time. I would love to keep this cpu as it has been solid along with this board. I know i can move to an fx processor but why spend the 150 bucks for an fx 8350 unless i really need to. Oh and my board supports 125 watt procs, so i cant go past the 8350

Ok your link is excellent, I just noticed the area about the cool n quiet, i have that on. I probably should have disabled that from the get go.. I do not use amd overdrive, and prefer going into the bios for any adjustments. Anyways, I will read and re-read your quide 4ryan6, there is a ton of helpful info for me here and as Tradesman1 pointed out slow and steady wins the race... This is true and i should be taking my time with this. Great info and answers everyone!!! I will post any cpuz pics and hwmonitor pics as well. If gpuz is neccessary to helping i will post those as well. Again i really appreciate the fast responses, helpful articles and sage wisdom!!
