I would like to buy a new copy on win 10 - its cheaper than taking it to a shop for $150

any guidance on being able to do this?

On another PC, download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB - just buy a 16gb USB, its cheaper than buying win 10 if its currently installed on PC now. You should already own Win 10, you just didn't have an installer. I assume you updated Win 7 or 8 to 10?

Page faults are normally just driver errors, you could do next part and see if we can fix current install?
Can you follow option one here
and then do this step below: Small memory dumps - Have Windows Create a Small Memory Dump (Minidump) on BSOD

that creates a file in c windows/minidump after the next BSOD
copy that file to documents
upload the copy from documents to a cloud server and share the link here and someone with right software to read them will help you fix it :)

this is a new machne and win 10 crashed - what kind of OS do I need to use the media creation tool?

Thanks so much for the reply

As it is now I was using rufus and the *.iso(64) file on a usb card reader and was able to make some files...then

I would get to a windows screen - and then the installation would hang and loop back to the BSOD

I am presently making those files (using rufus) on a XP SP3 os machine

the sick machine is not being upgraded - it came with win 10

Don't use XP to create Win10 boot media.

The Acer has it's own factory recover built in to restore Win10, power on laptop and press ALT+F10 when the acer screen shows up.

Now if you want a clean Win10 without Acers bloatare, use the media creation tool to download Win10 ISO to USB, best to do this on a 64-bit Windows machine.
Then download, extract and save the drivers from Acer to the USB for safe keeping.

Restart the laptop and go in to BIOS and switch from UEFI to LEGACY BIOS, so you can install from USB.
Save and restart, install from USB, I believe F12 to select boot device at Acer logo.

yeah - that's the problem - I cant get to the recovery partition of the HD - I have messed with bios and tried all possible combs.
I do have a win 8 machine with very limited HD space

So in other words download the iso file which I've done
Put it on a usb - stick in the usb run the media creation tool on the win 8 machine and the files I need will be seen by the acer..I have done the legacy thing many a time already

Stay tuned:) and thank you for your guidance...
But IF this doesnt work and I could get another full legal copy of win 10...does the OS still come on DVD?

Jeff

instead of giving the computer shop $100-$150 ,,,I'll buy a white flag and never buy an acer again
I bought a 7lb paperweight for $400+

Just a very BIG word of advice...buy a machine and then MAKE the USB/SD card BU of Win 10 and the system you have

otherwise....

You don't have any friends who can create the USB for you? Its not like its single use, and you can format USB later and use it for anything.

Stores should offer a service to sell the ISO or download it for people who don't have the ability to make it themselves.

you are exactly correct about the recovery service - inquired to two comp shops in SE Wis...what a joke

2-3 days $100-$150...WHAT?

So on the Acer site i got to where I can order a USB stick that is the exact config of my laptop (gave them my serial # on the back of the laptop) - $47... coming tomorrow

I have acer notebook but the HD space stinks and could not use rufus and the *64.iso file

hope it works - no matter what I need this recovery stick

PLEASE if anyone reads this - BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM!!!!! Use a SD card to do it...

got a e reov stick from Acer - it doesnt work
the bios sees it as a Toshiba MSFT NORB - dont know what that means

I also see an *.xml file (could be a script?) it points for the ISO files on the stick but the path for all of them starts with the letter "Z" - shouldnt it have a differnet letter? Like the next in time that would be assigned on the laptop?

The stick does not work no matter what config I do with the BIOS - the BIOS sees the stick and I think I got some bad files or some wrong files are you able to guide me through to see if that is true..also the stick is R/W protected so I copied the files off to alter them if needed/

I spent $50 on a stick does not work....

Toshiba MSFT NORB = type of USB. its the name of the model - http://usb.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest/11462/TOSHIBA-MSFT-NORB

drive Z is a ram drive set up by the win 10 installer so it can install win 10

at boot press F12 and choose your Flash drive as bootable device, if F12 doesn't work, enter BIOS pressing F2 and enable boot list (F12), then save and exit.

to narrow booting problem, you can try to disable secure boot too:

http://acer--uk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27071/~/how-to-enable-or-disable-secure-boot

https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/526414/aspire-e15-cant-boot-from-usb

I thank for your advice - I really do . But I have used all possible combinations of the BIOS to get the stick to work..
I.E
enable or disable secure boot
use F12
Leagcy...
Clearing or restoring the GPT partition (what is that nayway? when I try to restore it - it give me a write disk error)
clear all secure boot settings
enable UFEI(s?)

The stick is write protected - which really makes me angry..it doesnt work but at least for the $$ I have a 32GB - but its worthless

Now there is a way around this..I can write those files off the stick to another and maybe play with them...for instance

theres this *.xml file that point to drive "Z" - is it worth it to alter that path?

Here is the *.xml file

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
- <xNappDeploySetting xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
- <Os1Image>
- <RcdList>
<string>Z:\data\RCD_FD.NGRA0.13E_1-4.ISO</string>
<string>Z:\data\RCD_FD.NGRA0.13E_2-4.ISO</string>
<string>Z:\data\RCD_FD.NGRA0.13E_3-4.ISO</string>
<string>Z:\data\RCD_FD.NGRA0.13E_4-4.ISO</string>
</RcdList>
<Scd>Z:\data\SCD_FD.NTHA0.013\SystemCD.dat</Scd>
- <LpcdList>
<string>Z:\data\LPCD_FP.XENXP.00T.ISO</string>
</LpcdList>
<PcdList />
</Os1Image>
- <Os2Image>
<RcdList />
<Scd />
<LpcdList />
<PcdList />
</Os2Image>
</xNappDeploySetting>

I gather this is a script for the installer - yes or no?

Jeff

reading your post over on the Acer forums, I wonder if the chirp you are hearing is the hdd itself - you already said
I tried to restore the GPT partition and it gives me a write disk error in the BIOS (HD bad?)
so its possible its a hardware problem
NTFS = New Technology File System

As for the script, i will see if anyone can explain it. Expect it loads certain data into Z drive and runs the installer. I am guessing though

Clearing or restoring the GPT partition (what is that nayway? when I try to restore it - it give me a write disk error)

Curious which GPT partition you deleted.

GPT = the disk format the hdd is set up in, HDD can either be MBR or GPT - this explains the basics: https://www.howtogeek.com/193669/whats-the-difference-between-gpt-and-mbr-when-partitioning-a-drive/

All partitions on a GPT drive are the same format, so which partition was it actually restoring/clearing? Normally a win 10 hdd has 4 partitions on it -
Partition 1 - Recovery
Partition 2 - System - The EFI System partition that contains the NTLDR, HAL, Boot.txt, and other files that are needed to boot the system, such as drivers.
Partition 3 - MSR - The Microsoft Reserved (MSR) partition that reserves space on each disk drive for subsequent use by operating system software.
Partition 4 - Primary - Where Windows is to be installed to.
I can't tell which it was?

Legacy/UEFI are boot methods.
Legacy boot method matches MBR HDD format
UEFI boot method matches GPT HDD format

AS you drive is GPT, it will only boot if UEFI is enabled. This explains why legacy didn't help.

I am not sure USB is bad, I just think your computer is sick and resetting BIOS might at least reduce its confusion. It could be a bad hdd so all your fixes won't fix it. Acer fixing it under warranty would be best answer.

Thanks to both of you - this thing is like I driving a car stuck in slush and then two people come along and give me a push out to free me...
:)
I did try to look up GPT on my own - its full of conflicting and confusing info..

And yes the more people that try to help thru this mess - it comes down to shipping it out to Texas.

I dont think copying the files of to a stick and altering the file path for the *.iso files (in the xml file) will make a difference

I didnt delete any GPT partition (i only did that after the laptop crashed if I try to restore it it gives me a write disk error in the BIOS and I think thats one more thing that points to a HDD failure) - It has to be a bad HDD

It was stated that in an Acer - Win 10 HDD there are four partitions;;;I had 3 before the crash. I know that for sure..now when I got the laptop I remember I only had two...the working partition and the recv partition

After a win 10 update I got another - never had 4

thanks again to both of you

Jeff

getting back to the "clink"
It sounds like two wine glasses toasting - but not with that duration
Now this noise I hear
Does any other Acer laptop owner hear that?
If not then it has the be HDD

Jeff

Windows 10 will create a recovery partition when you update your Windows version. Every 6 months they release a new version of win 10 as a free upgrade over windows update and it creates that partition during its install. I only had 1 partition until I updated my version and it made it.

GPT = Guid (Global Unique ID) Partition Table. It was created to fix limitations in MBR (Master Boot Record) which up until win 8 was the default Partition scheme for hard drives. Mian differences are GPT hdd can have 128 partitions on them (MBR max is 4) and the maximum size of a GPT hdd can be 18.8 million TB whereas MBR is 2TB. Since hdd are getting bigger, the last point is the most useful

GPT matches the UEFI bios which all new PC since 2009 has. If Win 10 sees a UEFI bios in PC it will insist on using GPT, as it has other benefits apart from the ones I mentioned

Lets hope Acer can fix it :)

Laptop got there on fri 2-16-18 (according to an acer auto email and UPS)
No word at all on the condition\status
