Dear Group,

I need your advice on a non Dell system. The Gateway newsgroup seems verrry
quiet. I have an 8 year old Pentium P5-120 windows 95 machine which we use
successfully for the kids. I was attempting to install MS Office 97 when one
of my kids ejected the CD and
rebooted the machine. Windows loads successfully and as part of the boot
sequence it indicates that the keyboard and mouse are detected. However
after bootup the scroll lock, num lock and caps lock flash green regularly
in unison and neither the keyboard nor mouse responds 🙁. I have another old
machine and swapped keyboards but still the same problem. I guess the ports
could be gone but it seems like such a coincidence. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Doug

How old is the kid who did that? I'd make him/her reload the
whole machine from scratch. ;-> I'm only being halfway
facetious. Even if you've already reloaded it somewhere along
the line over the eight years you've had it, a Win 95 machine
would certainly benefit from a clean reinstall of everything.
And what better way to reinforce in a kid's mind that "it's not
nice to play around with the CD drive when Daddy/Mommy is
installing something on the computer" than have the kid in
question be the one to sit there mindlessly feeding floppies and
CDs to the computer? ;->

Thanks for the reply but how can I do *anything* without having access to
the keyboard or mouse?

So is it a hardware or software problem?

first, identify if this is a hardware problem or a software (windows)
problem by booting to a dos prompt. this can be done using your gateway
supplied windows start up diskette or by pressing the f8 key during post
(power on self test, the part of booting when the screen is displaying
messages in plain white text on a black background like counting memory and
identifying components). a menu boot should appear from which you can
select to start in ms dos... if you can type there without a problem then
you know that they keyboard problem is specific to windows. you can then
reboot again using the same method (pressing f8 burring post) and select to
start windows in safe mode... from there you should be able to get to
start-settings-controlpanel-system and then under device manager locate the
keyboard and mouse and delete them and then restart the system... they
should be added back upon a normal restart. though it may also be the case
that this is a problem with the gateway programmable 'anykey' keyboard being
in some strange mode... the gateway website should be able to instruct you
on how to reprogram the keyboard to factory defaults but i seem to recall
that you simply had to hold down the escape key when you power on the system
to do it. finally, i seem to recall that using the 'on screen keyboard'
tool built into windows had some bug that resulted in rapid blinking of the
num/scroll/caps lock lights on the keyboard.... perhaps this feature was
turned on and the on screen keyboard is just shifted off to the edge of the
display... good luck.

to get to the windows boot menu you need to press the f8 key directly after
the beep at the end of the post process, but before the appearance of the
windows logo screen. a few failed attempts and you will find the correct
timing to accomplish this... pressing f1 or delete will enter you into the
system bios which is not what i was suggesting. using your gateway boot
floppy or diagnostics disk would be much easier.
