I have a dell dimension 3000 I m am trying to up grade to windows 7 and keeps crashing on me

Dell Dimension 3000 Was running Windows XP I have been trying to up grade to Windows 7 an keeps crashing on me I was giving the machine so I don't have the factory restore discs. I cant get into the factory restore from booting can anybody out there help me with either an Idea on how to get widows 7 on this machine or restore back to factory settings
