I have a dell xps 8900 and want to install a 6 to 10 tb hard drive but dell said 4 tb will a large hdd work

Don't see why not, that is a recent enough system so should see a large drive. Just make sure you can use GPT vs MBR for the disk, depends on the OS and how it's setup https://www.startech.com/faq/mbr-vs-gpt
