I have a hp pavillion lap top shuts off

my lap top will runs i am on it now. If i leave for a bit and come back the power light on but nothing eles not even the screen. So i would press and old power botton on and nothing is working. So after playing around i unplug power supply and flip lap top and remove batterie for 4 sec then put it back in and voila it starts again while pressing power botton on. Can someone help me it never did this before? why?

The unit may be overheating, forcing it to shut down.
There is freeware available to download to measure core temps.
