I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 laptop. It does not have a dvd/cd drive.

Yoga 2 does not have a dvd drive, so I had to purchase an external drive but still can't play videos. I downloaded the VLC but it still will not work. It recognizes the DVD and shows the cover but will not play.

Check to make sure the DVD drive has the region code set to 1 (assuming you are in the US). Can also try downloading a third party codec pack like ffdshow. But Media Player show be able to play any DVD. If on Windows 10, you have to download the Media Player app first.
