I have a computer with P4 1.7 and 1GB RAM
I was running photoshop CS2 and it seems like I need more ram or whatever.... My question is can I upgrad the CPU to a 3.0 or do I need a new motherborad to do this?

or should I consider getting a new computer?

thanks

In order to answer that question we need more info. like.

Is the PC a Manufactured Pc (Dell, Hp, Gateway, Etc)
If so they probably are using propritery parts which can only be upgraded by them.

What is your motherboard model and manufacture. We need to know this to know the maximum DDR ram speed it can suppport.

We also need to know what socket your processor is 478, 775, etc.

And if you want use to tell you if you need a new computer or not we still need more info.

Your computer is getting long in the tooth. Even if it is not williamette core (a lot of the 1700s were), it's a northwoodA at best. They are severely memory bandwidth limited.
If you are still running the original mobo, it is probably not capable of handling newer chips.
Time to bight the bullet.

Its Compaq Evo D500 Ultra slim system
this is all I know about the system... I had this system since 2002

if you can help me with the little info I just giving please do..

thanks for the replys

due to the fact it's manufactured by a company IE Compaq, you probbaly wont be able to do much with it. as the Cables are usually cut and made to a custom length and motherboard connetcors and size maybe different.

Atleast that how my old HP was...

I am thinking that the mobo in that comp is a socket 423 although I could be wrong. If it is a socket 423 then it would only be able to support up to a 2Ghz p4. However intel did make a 478 pin 1.7GHz p4 as well. Either way though to upgrade to a 3GHz p4 would more than likely require a mobo replacement.

On second thought it would be better to just keep your current comp around as a second computer and build another. As you would require more than just another motherboard. From what I can find on the net about your comp it uses either pc133 sdram or rambus pc 800. Most of the newer boards use ddr2, ddr, or pc1066 rdram.

Actually, I've bought rams for my computer before and it had DDR PC2100. I intend on keeping this computer but I do really need a good high speed one as well... This computer is pretty fast, the 1GB RAM really helps, but when I'm multitasking it cant support the applications

I really couldn't find anything specific on that system. Most of the ones I seen listed only listed the mem as 256meg of sdram. Intel was stuck on rdram there for awhile as well which was way overpriced compared to ddr modules.

Its always good to have another comp around. If you plan on doing alot of multitasking though you should look into the dual core athlons. Intel has dual core as well, but I wouldn't recommend them at this point in time.

mobo pic
If this is the board you have, it will support only Williamette P4 up to 2Ghz.
For $215 you can get combo (new board with 775 socket + P4 530 3.0Ghz) @ partspc.com
Mobo is micro ATX so it should fit in your case.
