Disconnect the phone before trying to start the laptop again in case it's corrupting the photos.

What have you tried on the laptop? Is the battery flat? Remove the battery and try with mains power alone. Try to start it in Safe Mode by mashing the Function 8 key as soon as you power up.

Have you looked at the phone to check the photos are still there? Hopefuly you were copying them and not moving them.
