I have an i5 6400, is it worth upgrading to a i5 7600k?

I also have a gtx 1070 and a 1080p 144hz monitor. I can save up and sell my current mother board and i5 but would my upgrade be worth it?

Do you plan/wish to start overclocking CPUs?

If not, i'd suggest you just check if you can update your MOBO's BIOS to hold up a Kaby Lake CPU and get the standard i5 7600 or a i7 7700 ( for Hyperthreading )

That way you will be able to keep your MOBO, saving up costs and still getting a much better performance compared to your i5 6400
That i5 is supported by your motherboard. All kaby lake cpus run on Skylake chipsets. The only problem is if you have a locked chipset, namely those that start with H,because you wont be able to overclock it.

The difference between them is very noticeable, around 35%

Although you will have to get yourself a nice Z170/270 MOBO and a After-Market cooler to use with the new CPU as well, as K chips don't come with one and only Z170/270 MOBOs can Overclock them.

IMO it's a worthy upgrade as the 6400 is the weakest of all i5 ( for desktops ), and will hold you back in CPU-Intensive games. But, if you're not willing to spend much money, no real reason to go Kaby lake. The Skylake 6700K is already a great CPU and the Z170 MOBO is cheaper no doubt.

Their performance change is slight, being the Kaby a optimized/faster Skylake CPU, but not really worth all the price up IMO.
But if you got the cash, why not?

I'd throw up a 6700K+Z170 ( Or even just a 6700 so you can re-use your current MOBO ) and a nice SSD in the system.

No, you wouldn't have to get a new board. Most 100 series boards now support Kaby Lake chips with a BIOS update, but you didnt say exact model.

And yes you'd see a pretty good increase, but am not sure it's worth the cost for what you'd get unless you sell the 6400.

Why not determine for yourself? Lower your graphical settings and look at your framerates - whatever you're getting is almost certainly CPU-limited. Add ~35% to that and see if you can justify the cost of a 7600K for 35% more than whatever you're getting.

He wouldn't if he was thinking of just the 7600, but he's asking for a K version of that CPU.
I believe it's good to mention that if he wanna OC, he definitely will have to swap the MOBO as well. ( That's, of course, if he hasn't a Z170 mobo already. Which i believe he doesn't because of the i5 6400)

Thanks for the info guys, I currently have a H170 mobo but I could sell my current mobo and processor to add on the cost of getting a Z270 the 7600k and a decent cooler. I currently play alot of witcher 3, overwatch, and rise of the tomb raider.

depends on what you're doing with your system - if all your doing is gaming, I wouldn't make the leap. If you're encoding or if you're trying to stream your gaming sessions to twitch, it might be worth considering. The K series chipsets do have a better stock clock and boost clock even if you don't elect to overclock them. Not that much of a game changer in my opinion - going to a 7th gen i7 (even if it isn't unlocked) would be a significant upgrade because you're going to quad core hyper threaded.

Just my two cents - save your cash
