Question i have an i7-2600 cpu and i am looking to upgrade to a newer cpu but i dont know what to choose?

I am looking to upgrade my cpu but I don't know what to upgrade to, should i choose an intel cpu for better gaming performance or go with a best bang for your buck with an amd cpu.


I am aware that i will also have to upgrade my mobo, and ram but i would like to start with choosing my cpu.

current system:
cpu: i7-2600 @3.4ghz

gpu: gtx strix 1060
ram: corsair vengence 16gb (2x8) 1600mhz

According to this the best CPU only upgrade you can make is to an 17-3770K:

That CPU still sells for about $300+.
So if you are happy with the rest of your rig and just want to get another year or maybe 2 years out of it the i7-7700k would work.
But if you want to move to a comparable AMD rig you could build a B450, Ryzen 5 2600 (or 3600), 3200 (or faster) DDR4 RAM.
You can get a decent B450 motherboard, Ryzen 5 2600 and a 16 GB kit of DDR4 3000 or 3200 RAM for that same $300:

Im quite sure that i7 2600 can be paired with something like a gtx 1660s or gtx 1660ti which will ofcourse give better gaming performance than a gtx 1060.

What games do you play? So we can determine if its the cpu or gpu.

i7 2600 was paired with RTX 2060 and it was not a problem for most games.
unless you want Assasin Creed 60 fps+ on max settings, this CPU still can, but will be loaded to the brim.

overall I would grab RTX 2070 with new CPU+mobo+ram as your balance is quite nice and GPU alone won't yeld good bang/buck result.

Intel's lead in games is GONE except at the very high range - meaning you will get better bang for bucks AND performance with an AMD system except if you have a RTX2080Ti coupled with a i9 9900K(S)
If you want to keep your 1060, a Ryzen 3600 is good. If you want a RTX2070, get a 3800X. In-between, the 3600X is good bang for buck and the 3700X is more versatile.

That system is still capable enough. It wouldn't hurt to grab a Ryzen 7 2700x though if you can find one for a good deal in the next few days. We're talking less than $160 for an 8 core 16 thread CPU. While no it isn't the best around for gaming it would still be a decent upgrade for you. Tech deals on youtube also says to get 32GB of RAM. Might as well while it's cheap. You never know when RAM will go up.

Bigger gpu gets you better graphics detail. It does not increase fps.

The cpu pre-renders all the frames it can according to clock speeds and IPC. Sends those frames to the gpu. If the game code only allows for 20 pre-rendered frames in a second, that's it. That's all the gpu will see. The gpu cannot increase that number at all.

The gpu has to finish render the frames and stick them on screen according to resolution and detail settings. Doesn't make a difference if it's a gtx1060 and capable of 100fps in that game or a RTX2080ti and capable of 300fps. It gets 20.

The only time a bigger gpu does increase fps is when it is struggling or incapable of finish rendering all the frames the cpu sends it at the chosen detail settings. So if a 9700k is sending 300fps and a gtx750ti is maxed out at low, feebly trying to get 60fps on screen, a move to a more powerful gpu will allow for higher details and higher fps. But at no time can the gpu exceed the 300 sent by the cpu.

The issue facing the i7-2600k is lack of IPC. It simply cannot carry out the number of instructions per clock necessary to pre-render high amounts of frames in most of the common popular current titles.
