I would first clean up the system with CCleaner to get rid of most resource hogging crap and registry errors. Run the Clean and Registry portions both. Run it until it comes back clean.

Then check your systemconfiguration/startup for boxes you can uncheck. I have only 6 for comparison. Anything running in the background that isn't needed is trouble waiting to happen. And hogging resources.
