whats missing from heading? is it stuck repairing?

On another PC, download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB
going in blind, I would sugest two things that might work
change boot order so USB is first, hdd second
boot from installer
on screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install.
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose start up repair - this will scan PC and maybe fix this - will ask for logon info

if that doesn't work, try safe mode
boot from installer, on 2nd screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose start up options
hit the restart button
choose a safe mode (it doesn't matter which) by using number associated with it.
Pc will restart and load safe mode

if it gets you into safe mode, just restart PC. you shouldn't need to do anything here, sometimes just going into safe mode fixes things up

Hi Colif
Thanks for your time.

All i see is my sony vaio logo, then the windows logo with the loading circle under it. The laptop stays there for a while and then reboots, to do it all again.I have tried removing battery etc. and changing boot order settings in BIOS just to see if that made a difference (I was already desperate back then).

Can I create a Windows 10 installer from a Windows 8 machine?
Will using the installer to reboot my laptop delete any data?

Thanks again.

Yes, you can use win 8 to make the installer, and No, following those 2 steps won't hurt your data.

It is a Sony Vaio

I tried 64 Bit, then 32 Bit then "both" but the mct seems to stick coz it can't locate a USB flash drive. I have tried another USB flash drive and now am trying to find a blank CD to save an ISO to...

you said that already.. doh

To boot from USB on your model:
Shut the PC down completely
Begin tapping the F2 key as soon as you press the power button to access BIOS
Use the arrow keys to access the Advanced tab in BIOS
Select External Drive Boot and change the setting to Enabled
Arrow over to the Boot tab and make sure that USB Device is set in the boot order so that it is above the internal hard drive
Arrow over to the Exit heading in BIOS and select Save Changes, press the Enter key
Select Yes and press Enter to confirm the changes
Select Exit Setup and press Enter twice to confirm exit
At this point the laptop will reboot, and after you plug in the USB drive, it should boot to it the next time you reboot the PC. If not, there is a possibility that the USB flash drive is not properly configured as a bootable device.

Thanks very much for that, I had worked out how to get to BIOS, but I couldn't get the tool to write to my USB drive on my other (working machine). I am writing it first to a file on my desktop, then to transfer to a USB, but I am not sure whether it will work. I have changed the BIOS settings on my laptop, and it is ready to accept the tool, but now I can't get to create a tool on a USB..... Sad

Yep,the media creation tool can't see several USBs

I am downloading an ISO to burn to a DVD, but have now downloaded and started rufus, and will use that. just waiting for ISO to finish downloading (I think another 2 hrs....). I worked on a presentation and program for a robot all day, and haven't got access to another laptop for the presentation in 7 hrs time..... Thanks for all your help... You may have saved the day I think.

I used a DVD last time i installed win 10. Its pretty much the only thing I have used my Blue ray drive for. To get my motherboard to boot off USB requires changing too many settings, easier to use DVD since I have one.

sounds like other machine needs new USB drivers or something (not often a question moves onto a completely different PC but there you go)

its a lot of work just to try to get into windows, hope its worth it

if the two fixes i originally offered don't work, you might want to make this on a PC which can see USB sticks: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/ - its just useful if there anything on hdd you can't afford to lose, as you can use it to copy files off again.

OK.Partial success

The laptop boots from USB

I then tried

on screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install.

choose troubleshoot

choose advanced

choose start up repair - this will scan PC and maybe fix this - says this option is"not supported"

The other options are:
System restore
System image recovery
CommandPrompt
Go back to the previous build (can I just choose this one)????

I wish I could say this is the last question.....

i wish you could too :)

Looking into that message, it appears the only thing to fixes it is a reinstall of win 10. All the other repair options don't work.
Make a DVD with ubuntu live on it and use linux to copy info off laptop you don't want to lose
once its all copied off, use the Win 10 installer you have and follow this guide: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

this will fix it as in this post, its only thing that worked for the others: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/windows-10-operating-system-version-is/48361caf-22e4-4e36-a5c8-eba878f80899

Aaaarghhhhh

I got ubuntu to run on boot, and tried to mount the drive, and got an error message about corrupt NFATS

I can't follow the LINUX instructions as it is not clear where the "menus" are that they refer to.

I saw friendly old DOS in my travels, and wished it was all that simple again.

I assume it meant NTFS, that is the file system that replaced dos. It confirms that windows is broken, we already knew that.

I have to admit to never having used linux before, i just know other people have worked it out but I haven't done it myself. It might be easier if you take laptop to shop, ask them to backup data on C and then fresh install win 10 on laptop for you.

If it wasn't a laptop I would suggest putting its hdd into other PC and copy info off it that way, but unless you lucky, removing hdd is not so easy in laptops.
