Ok so i am currently running an fx 8350 OC to 4.5 ghz. The power supply the i am currently running is a corsair cx500. what i am wondering it why other people with the same specs are getting 100% gpu usage. Iv seen the 8350 and gtx 980 work together just fine. All i come up with when searching is that my cpu is bottle necking the gpu. I found that hard to believe as every forum says somthing different. So what is going on is I buy a 980 super pumped to throw it in to find out wow my 750 ti worked 1000 times better. The gpu will not use 100% usage or it power usage unless im running benchmarks. however in game the gpu sits at 40-60% and as now as 20-30. Meanwhile the cpu is at like 60% max. when this happens. So if anyone could help that would be awsome. i dont want to throw my gtx 750ti back in. Also im being told i dont have enough ram? I will post my specs and hope for some help here lol. Im ready to dump buck on a new system to hopefully run this card. I see other running the cpu gpu combo and getting awsome usage and frames. I sit at low usage and struggle to hit 50-60 fps with hard drops of 30-20. If psu and Ram are my issue wich is what im expecting please someone let me know.

My specs
Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3
AMD fx 8350 at 4.5 ghz
8 gig of hyper x memory hyper x hx316c10fbk2/8
Corsair cx500w psu
gtx 980 sc acx 2.0
Corsair H100i water cooler
and two samsung evo ssds

First thought would be drivers. Have they been updated properly?
Second thought power supply. I would not attempt to run your system on that PSU. It is far too low performance, you have a mini-van PSU in a race-car system. Even if the problem is solved elsewhere, replacing your PSU should be job 1.

As DonkeyOatie stated, try updating your drivers first, that alone could save you.

There are only a few other things I could think are the problem. The GTX 980 should have 2 areas for power cables. If not done already, connect BOTH the 8 pin and the 6 pin connectors into the card.

Make sure that your card is in the PCI-e slot of your motherboard for maximum performance as well.

If all else fails, a different power supply definitely would be the solution. 500w is not nearly enough for your system, unless it has around 100% efficiency (which I'm positive yours does not). Try going for a gold rated 80+ 650w or so power supply. Investing in a higher power supply (even around 750 - 1000) may be a good idea if you think you might need to upgrade in the future. EVGA's power supplies are superior, and I would suggest almost any EVGA power supply over most brands.

You don't have a lot of details in the post about your issue. Just looking at the % of use does not explain what the issue is, as that is not an issue in itself.

What game is slow? What settings are you using? Did you run a benchmark like 3DMark to compare speeds with the old card and the new card?

And yes, an overclocked CPU with a 980 should be using a better power supply than a CX model 500 watt one.

I would try to stay away from corsair's cx series, they arrive dead a lot PLUS they have a higher chance of shocking your system than any other power supply. 850w is plenty, and will be future proof as well :)

As for your RAM, that is not a problem at all. Not many games use more than 8gb of ram, unless they're beta games and aren't yet fully optimized to use the correct amount of ram.

if those connectors are already connected, and you've updated / installed all required drivers, you will need a new power supply. And yes, that power supply should work just fine. I typically try to stay away from Corsair's CX series because of voltage drops / decreased performance, but even with that in mind, if you already have this power supply / have already ordered it, it will work just fine.

IF you haven't ordered it yet, I suggest ordering one of these

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G28N1025&cm_re=evga_g2_750w-_-17-438-017-_-Product

You would be safer with the gold rating and a more trusted power supply, plus a 650w one of these should perform almost as well as the cx850m. Either way, both power supplies will work reguardless.

Don't worry about ordering a 1000w power supply, that is way too much for your needs and will just raise your power bill. Getting the cx850m will be just fine, don't worry about ordering another one. It will fit your needs perfectly fine :)

Good choice, just remember, don't buy the 1000w power supply, anything 650 - 850w should be good for your needs. The only plus side about a 1000w power supply is you'll probably never need a new one, if you got a 650 - 750, you might need a new one if you decide to run 2 graphics cards in SLI.

dang, that's a big upgrade. I would've just RMA'd the 980 and gotten another one to see if only having 1 is the problem. you really don't need 2 980 ti's atm, but I'm sure it will eventually come in handy. you're basically future proof for about the next 5 - 10 years. sorry that the power supply didn't work, but that did seem like the most logical solution, especially because 500w can not power a 980 ti, even at 100% efficiency. reguardless, good luck with your PC mate!
