I was turning a very old laptop (HP 620) from work to home use for my little boy. I changed it from Network to a home PC and rebooted. Now it recognises my name as admin but not my password. I can restart and have an option to revert back to factory settings but I will then lose a lot of files I have on the laptop. Any suggestions

Were you a domain user at your work network? If so, when you login does it just have admin, or is it (companydomain)\admin.

I was a domain user but after changing the domain name has gone, it just has my name.

This is a password reset tool that I use to reset forgotten passwords. It is a bootable utility so you'd have to either burn it to a cd or make a bootable USB. It is a pretty straightforward program, and should be able to blank out the password set on there. Any files encrypted with the password will be unreadable.

You need to have a local account setup, when you removed the PC from the domain it would have warned you that you need to have a local account to logon after the computer is removed from the domain.

You will either need to find out what that local account is, if there is one, or re-join it to the domain, logon with the domain account and then create a new local account to use.

The other option is to re-install Windows clean and that will create the local account for you, but that will wipe your files.
