I have the product key but don't know where to download windows 7 (without wiping out the OS on my desktop)

Solution
if old drive is still ok, put it back. Burn the recovery discs (about 4 dvds). Once done, replace the drive and boot from dvd. All laptop owners should burn the recovery dvds as soon they get the laptop. Unfortunately most people don;t do it.

Other option: Laptop should have a MS sticker at the bottom. It has the key code that is attached to the machine. Borrow any windows 7 disc and use the key code. You need need to install all the drivers from laptop manufacturer's website.

Good luck

You may want to download a migration software that can transfer your OS to the new hard drives. I know that if you buy a SSD from them, it comes with an external SATA cable and a migration software that moves everything for you while having both drives connected to your laptop via USB
