[SOLVED] I have majorly messed up and have no idea what to do - my laptop says 'no bootable device' after secure erasing the SSD

Hi,

I'm a tech noob, and have got in way over my depth, and am worried I've just destroyed two of my laptops...

OK, what I was trying to do: I wanted to 'secure erase' my SSD's, as I'm aware just pressing the 'delete' key then clearing the recycle bin won't stop a determined attacker. The plan was to secure erase, reinstall windows, then encrypt the drives with veracypt so, going forward, I wouldn't have to worry about sensitive data on the machines being compromised.

I used the third party tool 'parted magic' to securely erase the SSD's. This 'worked', and partedmagic confirmed that the drives were successfully secure-erased. Now here my problems start...

The laptops came with a copy of windows 10 pre-installed. Upon powering up, I got the 'no bootable device' screen. In the BIOS, there is no boot order at all.

From reading around, a common solution proposed was to get a USB stick with windows installation media on, insert that in, and then it'd reinstall windows for me. I did this - and when I inserted the USB stick, it did indeed recognise it as windows installation media, and I got the typical choose language/country etc that you get when installating windows.

However, when choosing a location to install windows (i.e. on the SSD, this is the only drive I have), the SSD does not appear as an option. Indeed, nothing appears as an option, all that the installation media tells me is 'We couldn't find any drives. To get a storage driver, click load driver' (see here: https://ibb.co/jv0mPcp).

I have tried going onto the manufacturers website, and downloading the 'IRST intel' drivers relevant to my machine, as I was told thid was a possible solution. However when I put in the seperate USB stick with these drivers on, and click 'load driver' (from the attached screen) windows does not recognise those drivers, and it just displays a message 'No signed device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK'.

I'm unsure where to go from here and am getting seriously concerned that my computers may never work again (this exact same problem is on two machines now). The BIOS does at least know that the SSD is there as it appears in the bios, and I am able to boot using the 'partedmagic' media, but installing windows seems impossible. Can anyone help?

Ralston, problem is installer can't see the drive to install onto.

@pala3223 check in the bios of laptop and see if drive set up as RAID or AHCI, You would want AHCI I believe, might explain why its not showing the ssd now.

I already have created windows installation media on a USB. The issue is when trying to install it, there's no option to select the SSD.

I'm not sure what that means. I've taken photos of every BIOS page..there's nothing about 'RAID' or 'AHCI' on any of them. I've taken photos of the BIOS pages though to show you, as to be honest I'm not really sure what I'm looking for:

Anything there that I need to change?

I've come across this from acer (my laptop manufacurer). When I input the serial number they say they can create me a 'recovery USB' which includes all the drivers, operating system etc that the computer came with - https://store.acer.com/en-gb/e-recovery

Would that get my laptops working again (they are both the exact same make and model so I guess I'd only need one copy of this). It does cost £50, but at this point I've already spent hours trying to get them to work without any success and am tempted to just pay the £50 and write it off as the cost of my lesson not to mess with things like this when I've no idea what Im doing. Would that recovery USB probably work or have I damaged everything too much for that?

okay, so that doesn't help

DO you know if you have the latest bios?

what make/model laptop is it? maker might have instructions or I might find someone else with same problems

When I put in the serial number on the Acer website, it says it is an: Aspire A515-56.

OK, this did work - thank you!

Well, it worked to a degree. Windows is now installed. After it's loaded up however - I have no sound, no network connection can be made, absolutely nothing.

Could this be a driver issue? Do I have to download every single driver again and put it on the system?

Okay. I haven't read through all of this. These days a PC does not come with an optical drive, so there are NO drives present to boot from and nothing in the BiOs set. If you have the stuff on a flash drive, plug it int to a usb port. At boot go into your BiOS and you should see that Flash Drive listed. Set that as your Boot device, exit and boot from that to install everything. Another option is an external Optical Drive.
