I'm a tech noob, and have got in way over my depth, and am worried I've just destroyed two of my laptops...
OK, what I was trying to do: I wanted to 'secure erase' my SSD's, as I'm aware just pressing the 'delete' key then clearing the recycle bin won't stop a determined attacker. The plan was to secure erase, reinstall windows, then encrypt the drives with veracypt so, going forward, I wouldn't have to worry about sensitive data on the machines being compromised.
I used the third party tool 'parted magic' to securely erase the SSD's. This 'worked', and partedmagic confirmed that the drives were successfully secure-erased. Now here my problems start...
The laptops came with a copy of windows 10 pre-installed. Upon powering up, I got the 'no bootable device' screen. In the BIOS, there is no boot order at all.
From reading around, a common solution proposed was to get a USB stick with windows installation media on, insert that in, and then it'd reinstall windows for me. I did this - and when I inserted the USB stick, it did indeed recognise it as windows installation media, and I got the typical choose language/country etc that you get when installating windows.
However, when choosing a location to install windows (i.e. on the SSD, this is the only drive I have), the SSD does not appear as an option. Indeed, nothing appears as an option, all that the installation media tells me is 'We couldn't find any drives. To get a storage driver, click load driver' (see here: https://ibb.co/jv0mPcp).
I have tried going onto the manufacturers website, and downloading the 'IRST intel' drivers relevant to my machine, as I was told thid was a possible solution. However when I put in the seperate USB stick with these drivers on, and click 'load driver' (from the attached screen) windows does not recognise those drivers, and it just displays a message 'No signed device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK'.
I'm unsure where to go from here and am getting seriously concerned that my computers may never work again (this exact same problem is on two machines now). The BIOS does at least know that the SSD is there as it appears in the bios, and I am able to boot using the 'partedmagic' media, but installing windows seems impossible. Can anyone help?
