I am only asking this because i have never seen a six core processor before and it is the same price so what is going on?

Oh that is fine then.

I would prefer a six cored CPU over a quad core since it combines the qualities of both quad core and 8 core CPU. Kind of middle ground with decent per core performance and good enough number of cores for almost all games.
There is even FX 8350 Vishera there which retails for around $190.

Its an 8 core CPU and has an unlocked multiplier.

Out of these two CPUs, I would go for FX 6300 as Zambezi CPUs are not that good when compared to Piledriver CPUs.
FX 6300 definitely. Its a good gaming CPU for budget gamers.

However keep in mind that an i5 4670K (Quad Core) can easily trump it.

He was saying that even if the FX 6300 was a quad core, it would still be better than the FX 4170.
