I have NO idea where to start...I can hear something

Hello,
I can hear my computer speed up...it sounds like a fan...when it speeds up....my computer programs run faster....when it slows or stops, my programs slow and stop...I literally have to sit and wait for the fan to start so my program(s) start...I've read maybe a fan, a processor, a cpu, etc. etc. How can I tell what it is and what to do....I don't even know what a processor IS!!! (ok...I'm 50...busy raising a family...don't even use a cellphone!) HELP!
