I have this ram problem which i am not able to figure it out

Long story short....needed extra ram for pc game....had cpu with 2 ram slots . there was 1 slot which I hadn't used for a couple of years...I decided to insert a 4 gb ram stick(ddr3 1333hz) to it..then I switched ON the comp it started but there was no screen display and I couldn't do anything...then I got to know that the ram stick was absolutely fine..but there was problem with the slot....what should I do? Its annoying me for a while now...please help
