I just overclocked my fx 6300 for the first time and have some questions

I just overclocked my fx 6300 to 4ghz. I have been running prime 95 for over an hour now and my socket temp is pretty steady at 57 to 60 degrees with the core temp hanging around 46. I only increased the CPU voltage to 1.2v but it seems to be stable so far. As far as cooling goes, I am only using a Hyper 212 Evo so I assume that if I want to push the processor any further I am going to need to upgrade my cooling. Does this sound like a good place to stop? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for cooling upgrades? Thanks in advance.

well you must have a bit of good silicone on that Fx 6300 if you never had to change the stock core voltage of 1.2v. 1.2v on the core is average on most Fx chips.
You lucky little devil.
Well done !

I would go the water cooling route if you can afford it Dutch.
Dare say if you try for 4Ghz plus you might get to 4.2 or 4.4, but it will require a cpu core voltage bump to 1.3 or 1.35 maybe 1.4v all depends on the quality of the silicone die.

Mine is about 36c at idle in windows with a cpu water cooling solution a corsair H60 setup 120mm fan/ rad.
And never hit`s more than 56c under a cpu burn in test with running four/six threads/ ops for an hour solid.

But I also have about 6 140mm fans in 2 push front of case, and two pull at the top of the case
and two 140mm fans on the side panel of the case pushing air in as well, plus the water cooler fan pushing air out.
Cpu will go to 4ghz but my voltage on the core is higher to keep it stable under load.
So recommend extra fans as well if your case has room or fittings for them.

Yeah, I guess I got pretty lucky. Hopefully everything remains stable. My CPU voltage was initially set at 1.175 I believe. I tried running the 4ghz overclock at that voltage but it wasn't quite enough.

That looks like a pretty awesome option. I wasn't aware of that particular cooler. Thanks for the tip! Do they require a lot of power?

btw, just hit the 2 hour mark on prime95 and everything is still working well. It seems the temp is staying at a constant 57 degrees on the socket though I imagine the temps will be higher when the entire system is under heavy load, especially considering I'm running a big, dumb, hot r9 280x :)

1. An evo 212 is plenty for a 6300 up to the 4.5ghz mark
2. You only need to run a single prime blend run (10 minutes on average to complete) for stability testing.
3. Use amd overdrive /CPU status/thermal margin for temp testing - its by far the most accurate & trustworthy .
4. Depending on your actual motherboard ??
Most 6300's will hit 4.2/4.3ghz if you leave vtage settings to auto & set llc to high in bios.

No water cooling does not use much more power, they are quiet, because the fan`s on them spin at a low rpm.
I guess the pump in the water cooling loop does use a bit more power but not a lot.
Most of the case fans I have set up run at quiet a low Rpm to keep noise down, but I can set them to spin at a higher Rpm for more air flow if required.

The choice is yours see how far you can take the 6300 with the air cooler you have fitted like said most get to about 4.3 to 4.4 before you start to have to tinker with core voltage.
Just a note about cpu core voltage, 1.6v is about the max core voltage, try not to reach it or go over it, the heat tends to rise quiet rapidly on the cpu at that voltage point, and you risk damage to the Cpu core/ cores ok.
Just as a heads up for safety Dutch.

Good luck in hitting 4.4 Ghz.

Thanks for the advice. I think I am gong to go ahead and order something like the H60 before I overclock anymore. Right now at 4ghz the temperatures are well within the safe zone and everything seems stable. Are you pretty happy with the H60? Are there any other models that you would recommend over it?

Edit. I went ahead and overclocked to 4.2 just to see what my temperatures look like and they are remaining right around 57-58 running prime95 for a half hour or so. I still haven't had to increase my voltage.
