I would recommend Malwarebytes and AVG to start with. You could also try Spybot Search & Destroy for the trifecta.

I agree with No2rdame but I have been using the free version of Avast instead of AVG.

Don't forget, too, that many ISPs now provide free anti-virus software. Many people are unaware and don't realize this benefit, but it's quite nice. I'm with AT&T U-verse and McAfee is free for me.

Also, don't give the kids the admin password. Create regular user accounts for them.
