Hi,

Just started playing neverwinter nights, as I managed to pick it up with
both expansion packs pretty cheap. Never really played any RPGs before but
its something that appeals to me (SF&fantasy fan who never did find friends
willing to try out D&D) and I was recommended this as a good place to start.

So what I want to know is are there any good guides. I don't want
walkthroughs, just general tips and tactics on playing, be it neverwinter or
RPGs in general. Before someone throws google at me, I will say that I've
already done a bit of searching but wanted to know if there were any
recommendations rather than just sifting through tons of stuff that might be
useless.

Am thoroughly enjoying it so far.......so far being running around hitting
things with pointy objects and managing to complete one quest type thing. Am
playing as a fighter because...well I like hitting stuff as I mentioned.
Haven't hired anyone to help me yet but I guess that I need to soon, I
finally have enough money to so any advice there?

What about magic attacks on a fighter? I can happily chop through hordes of
dumb baddies but are there good ways to protect against or fight people who
lob big sparkly nightmares at you? Everytime I get a sorcerer type, he
manages to hit me with something, which whilst it doesn't seem to affect me
a great deal at the moment I imagine it'll be my ticket to instant death as
I meet nastier people.

Anyway, rambling a bit. Sorry for the daft questions but I guess I can
always carry on hitting stuff, levelling up and hitting stuff with bigger
pointier things.

Regards hitting things, I'm very keen on using power attack and being strong
for the sole purpose of smashing every breakable object in the game, when I
play a non-strong character I really miss the wanton furniture destruction
(I enjoy that more than killing things I think).

But erm yeah, other things.

I personally like the henchmen, but as a fighter they're not that important,
though you may find there are times when having a rogue will make serve you
well as opposed to just setting off traps, beyond that it's not something
you really need much. That said be sure that in the OC (official
campaign/original game) you at least talk to ALL of the henchmen before you
end chapter 1 and chapter 2, because they give you some very nice magical
items if you happen to have found certain items that they are searching for.
You can probably google a list of the items by putting something like "NWN
henchmen items".

As for fighting mages, well, you could try using ranged attacks to disrupt
spells esp something like paralysis bolts/arrows, or you could spend all
your skill points on stealth and try and creep in next to them (take your
armour off 1st), when a fighter doesn't need to close the distance on a mage
it really evens the odds.

Smashing things.....killing people...it doesn't really seem to matter. I'm
really not one for violence in real life which seems to equate to me being a
vicous, psychotic maniac when playing computer games. Ah well, nothing like
being a big person with a spiky weapon, hitting small people and defensless
furniture to unwind after a hard days pacifism.

Cheers for the tip, will check up on that

Yeah I've starting using more ranged atttacks, and that helps. Might try the
stealthy option even though it offends my pychotic "I'm here to hit you"
sensibilities.

Thanks for the advice

That's fine - Waving the sharp and pointies and shouting pointless insults
is a favourite activity of mine too. Here's my advice - when you meet
anything bigge'n' nastier than you, run away.

Take along one of the magic-users you can have as a henchperson - people all
have their favourites but mine is Linu because she can heal you really well
and can also hit hard too. Running away is actually quite a good tactic as
it means you can get your breath back, be healed without interference and
have a lie down if you need to (i.e. rest). My other main tactic is go
slowly through areas so you don't get overwhelmed with enemies and can pick
off the bad guys one or two at a time. I tried running across the graveyard
once, at night - not nice. I also like big powerful bows so I can pick 'em
off at a distance where they can't hit me in return (unless they have a big
powerful bow too, of course). But then I'm a coward - I don't think I could
role play a go-at-'em hero to save my life (or not as the case might be).

Best wishes
Maxon

Heh... 'tis on occasion ;-) The one that kept me wondering for quite a
while, was the warcry of the female paladin/healer henchman (can't
remember her name, ATM)... I kept wondering "Who the hell is 'Sammy'
Moonbow?!?" <grin> Finally found out it was 'Sehanine', not 'Sammy'.
Not that you would ever guess that's the name she was shouting, unless
you finally saw it written down somewhere.

Hi Good Folks,

I am trying to decide between NWN and BG2 to be my next CRPG..
(Got my BG2(SOA+TOB) for $15, and NWN(alone) for $9.99)..

I am looking for a more relaxing gaming experiencing - something to do
AFTER work and not becomes my primary work. :)

Looks like you folks is having lots of fun.. any advise?

Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Hi,

I have played most of the BG series.
I was soooooo looking forward to Nwn that I was bought it on its release.
Unfortunately it would not run (even on its fastest settings) on my antique
PC.

Nwn sat gathering dust. I contented myself with studying the manual
(difficult to
take-in without the context of game play!).

Now I have a PC capable of doing it justice, and broadband access to boot!

I have just started playing using my usual method of playing two characters.
I play one game as a bruiser. He or she leaves no stone unturned and
explores
as many options as possible within the game.
I also play, and always slightly in advance of the bruiser, a strictly
roleplayed
character (normally a wizard). This character seldom veers from his chosen
path and
faithfully disregards story paths which would not concern/interest him.

I decided to checkout Nwn's story lines for the evil/chaotic characters.
Darog Mumdin is currently Nec5 <Cleric1> Neutral/Evil <Death/Destruction>
I summon the panther with my Mage skill and the shadow with my Cleric
skill..

He is doing quite well and hasn't died once (yet).

I haven't developed an opinion on which is the better, NW or BG.
They are both great games in their own right; but I Luuuurve NW.

>> I am looking for a more relaxing gaming experiencing - something to do
>>AFTER work and not becomes my primary work. :)

I bet once you start playing work takes a back seat :0)

I have not yet played any online games, other than e-mail PBM's.
I would love to play NW with other serious Roleplayers.
I'm a bit thick and not very techie, any advice would be most welcome.
