Hi there,

I would ask about some HW issue, that I made last night.

relevant HW: AMD A10 7870K, CPU (never overclocked) + GIGABYTE F2A88XM-HD3P - MOBO

I wanted to clean dust from my CPU cooler, so I removed CPU from my MOBO. I didn t realize that I need to remove CPU from cooler, so I tried to put it back, but PC didn t start. I bent some pins on CPU with thes step: (circa 15). I straighten them, remove CPU from cooler and putted back CPU without cooler (wanted just for test). PC started, but shot down quickly (probably and fortunatly some safty catch). I putted back cpu cooler, but without thermal paste - I ordered one, I wanted just check if CPU is ok.

I didn t snuff any burned stuff, so I am think somehow I didnt destroy any part (luckily)

Problem is, that I am now able to get to BIOS only. After that, system started to boot windows (Windows is starting) and restart then. I checked in BIOS, CPU have now 76 C without thermal paste.

It is possible that thermal paste will fix this ? Or there are another problems that I should try to solve ?

Thank you for answers!

Andrej

DON'T run machine without thermal paste!
If it goes to BIOS, you probably did quite good work with those pins. Still, you have to apply thermal paste before proceeding any further, or you can fry your CPU.
Once you do that, of course other problems may come up, but it's no use to worry about that now.

Dear lord you don't learn very fast. Okay starting a CPU without a cooler may have hurt the CPU before it shutdown. The rate at which temps will climb is almost mind blowing. Starting it the next time without paste also a bad idea but less likely to kill anything. The bent pins themselves can hurt things pretty badly. And if you shoved the CPU into the socket before you straightened then pins you may have ruined the socket, and whatever parts are associated with one of the bent pins. Likely none of this occurred just wanting you to understand to STOP taking things apart you don't understand. The CPU paste especially on a stock cooler can make a massive difference. Wait on it that CPU shuts down around 75-80c so that's why it stopped on you.

So, I got thermal paste and applied it, Temperature ok, 36 C.

Some strange problem occured I would like to share. I was able to run windows, but it stared to messing with my display (Display driver stoped working/ was recovered) - the display worked but stared to blick and then recovered from that blackscreen.

AMD 7870K is APU, so the problem with display can be caused by integrated GPU in processor.

I decided to reinstall windows 7 + A10 Godavari driver and everything worked fine, but when I tried to run game (Dota 2), it was unable to show it properly. (great lags even PC restart)

I used AMD overdrive to check temeratures and other things, and I can see that integrated GPU has 0,0 voltage and very low performance.

I tried to install AMD Radeon drivers but i was unable to install it because it work properly only in win 7 with Service pack 1 I guess.

Problem is that after SP 1 installed, I got first problem - monitor is shuting off and on.

Any hints what is going on ? Sould I check pins on processor and try to straighten them better ?

Thanks

Andrej
