I have a second desktop I wanted to reset and install Windows on and link to our company's MS tenant. I did a fresh install of W11, linked it to my work account, updated the BIOS (v2204 to v3205) but I didn't stop BitLocker before doing so, despite the multiple warnings. Now the SSD isn't being registered as a storage device ?

Here's my PC:
  • Mobo: X670E Extreme
  • SSD: Samsung 980 Pro SSD

Here's what I've tried:
  • Enabled CSM in BIOS
  • Enable and Disable Firmware TPM Switch and Erase fTPM NV for factory reset in BIOS
  • Rollback BIOS to original 2204 version
  • Reseat the SSD

Are there other troubleshooting steps I should take, or is the drive fried?

Thank you

EDIT: I forgot to add, another step I tried before reseating the SSD was resetting the CMOS.

Are you saying it doesn't show in BIOS at all? What if you connect it to another PC?

From what I know of BitLocker (Not much, I don't generally use it on my own stuff), updating the BIOS without suspending it shouldn't corrupt the drive, although you might want to explain what these warnings were, when they appeared and why you ignored them. Do you update BIOS from within Windows itself?

At the very least you need the BitLocker recovery key, either previously exported and noted down somewhere or associated with a Microsoft account. If you don't have access to that key then any data on that drive is gone.

Who owns that second desktop? Yours, your company, or someone else?

In any case, have you contacted your company's IT support staff for assistance? If not, why not?

The specific warning was, "Please backup your Bitlocker recovery key and suspend Bitlocker encryption in the operating system before updating your BIOS."

It appeared when I started the BIOS update process and gave another confirmation saying something like, "Are you sure you want to start the BIOS update?" I have my Bitlocker key, I don't have an explanation of why I didn't suspend encryption.

I had just done a fresh install before updating the BIOS. I'm not worried about losing the data, but the drive isn't being recognized for me to reformat it.

It's my desktop. Our company is a small startup and I manage the IT, for better or worse. There is no one else to contact for assistance.

I'm more worried about getting the PC to recognize the SSD so I can reformat/use it, or order another if it's bricked.

What does that mean? Is it being detected in BIOS?
Can you show screenshots?

You're talking about HDD initially, then SSD.
Is this the same thing or you have multiple drives installed?

Disable secure boot.
Make sure TPM is enabled.
Do secure erase on your SSD. Use your other pc, to prepare bootable USB media for secure erase.

Apologies. I had just completed a fresh install of W11 on the Samsung 980. It booted and was working properly. I updated the BIOS and now the BIOS won't recognize the Samsung 980.

The only drive in question is the Samsung 980.

Only other PC I have is a laptop, so I can't plug the Samsung 980 into something to test.

Here are screenshots of Secure Boot, TPM, and the 2nd storage device being recognized, but not the Samsung 980.

Follow up regarding CMOS:

How was CMOS cleared? What procedure was used?
I followed this.

How to use the Clear CMOS button:
    • Power off the computer: Turn off the computer completely and unplug the power cord from the back of the PC.
    • Locate the button: The Clear CMOS button is usually located on the rear I/O panel (the back of the computer where you plug in peripherals) or on the motherboard itself, often near the CMOS battery or the expansion slots.
    • Press and hold: Press and hold the Clear CMOS button for about 5-10 seconds.
    • Plug in and power on: Plug the power cord back in and power on the computer.
    • Enter BIOS: You may be prompted to enter the BIOS setup. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter the BIOS (usually by pressing F1, F2, or Del key during startup).
    • Load defaults: In the BIOS, load the default settings (usually by pressing F5 or selecting "Load Optimized Defaults").
    • Save and exit: Save the changes and exit the BIOS (usually by pressing F10).

Did you disable secure boot?

Only Corsair MP600 SSD is being detected.
Do you have multiple M.2 SSDs installed.
Try moving Samsung 980 to a different M.2 slot.
I swapped M.2 slots and the both drives work in one of the slots, but neither work in the other. The SSD in the M.2 slot that isn't working isn't showing in Disk Management in Windows.

I'm looking in the manual what to do to enable the second M.2 slot. Idr from when I first built the PC.

EDIT: I have two Bitlocker keys, one for the 'Operating System Drive' and one for the 'Fixed Data Drive'.
