I have a foxconn m61pmv mobo, and just purchased, (only 100$ no loss if i messed up here, a amd phenom ii x4 965 black edition, but i worry i might be able to only support the 955 edition or less. have i made a mistake?
You kind of have, the mobo supports socket AM2/AM2+ while the 965 is a socket AM3 but, you "can" put AM3 CPU's in AM2+ Sockets and use them with DDR2 ram.

OK!, so before i start doing a rain dance here, what youre saying is yes, it could work!
any limitations or the cores, speed, clocking, etc, because of "not- compatible" issues?
Don't get too exited now. I'm not really familiar with the AM sockets but I do know some AM3 CPUs can be used on AM2+ sockets with use of DDR2 RAM. it might work, it might not, I have no freaking clue. What you could do is wait for more answers or start a new thread asking if "Can AM3 CPU's can work on a AM2+ Socket?" and explain your predicament. Sorry if I got your hopes up.
