So the other day when I was installing my hyper 212 evo cooler on my motherboard, the screws didn't line up, and it didn't fit and it was slanted and I got pissed. So I took my cooler and hit it against the poor CPU in the MOBO. It was maybe 1/2 to 2/3 of an inch from the CPU, I did it 1-2 times. Now I have all the components, proceeded to turn on the PC then... Yeh it won't turn on. The PSU is fine, but wanting to know if I ruined the CPU or just damaged the MOBO which shouldn't be a huge problem.

In the image, on the side you can see these 2 scratches, is that normal?!

besides those 2 scratches on the side, do you think intel would replace this CPU with my warranty if the CPU is the issue?

Solution
you hulk smashed that cpu so hard, the pins on the bottom might be bended or be broken, and if you are unlucky, you also bent the pin socket on the MB. this will not fall in your warranty and requires an replacement on users wallet.

owners fault.

you can try to bend the pins on the cpu back so it will work again, and if the pins broke on the MB, well RIP.

oh ok, I'm new to PC building so I didn't know what they were

I looked at the motherboard and didn't notice any bent pins. I'm not sure if its just my imagination, but ALL the pins were at maybe a 80 degree angle. It was likely my imagination

The metal on the top of your CPU is an IHS (integrated heat spreader), you could in theory drill into it and it would still work assuming you didnt hit the die below. Scratches would have very little effect, your thermal paste should fill them anyway. I doubt the problem lies with the CPU.

then you got lucky, then i think the pins or something else broke of the cpu or MB?

Question from john_minton : "Can I replace broken LGA 1151 pins with LGA775 pins in my motherboard?"

So I broke off the pins on my Gigabyte z370 hd3p while trying to repair bent pins. Is it possible to take the LGA775 pins and put them into an LGA 1151 pin hole? Can I even you a very fine piece of copper?

It works on AMD motherboards but I advise against it on intel motherboards because the pins aren't exactly straight and it would be very easy to fry your CPU by attempting this.

Intel CPUs do not have pins.

Pins were bent was luckily able to fix the MOBO and the PC is now running fine.

was luckily able to fix the MOBO, did take some time, but was able to bend the pins with a needle and magnifying glass
