Hello, yes I know there has been many threads about the socket 1366 cooler and I even had a look at the threads, got the information I needed for what I am going to be doing with my computer and I went with the Noctua NH-D14.

Well came to my surprise after trying to put it in and found out my ram is too high for the cooler so It can not fit and it does not mater even if i change the position of the cooler so it came down to either upgrade my ram to a smaller size version or just getting another cooler.

So my question now is.

What cooler should I get that is on PAR with the Noctua for overclocking purposes, I am gonna try and take the Noctua back and replace it with something equal in performance. and if its ram right now I am on 3 sticks at 1600Mhz and its on 12GB its the corsair dominator ram with the cooler, but I have not installed the ram cooler.

Thanks in advance

Squida

Update: Also just to note, I am using the Asus Rampage III Gene Motherboard

 From Noctua themselves. It uses small screws.
Ahhhh okay, did not know that the Heatsink can come off the ram, good to know.

will try that but if that does not succeed is the Hyper212 as good as the Noctua, money is not an issue when it comes down to it, so I am looking for performance over price.

Thank you for the reply though.

Yeah, that's what I hear you can do if the cooler won't fit, but I've never tried it, so I wouldn't know how, lol. But he said there should be some kind of screen on top of somewhere and unscrew it, then just take it off, you could try to find a video on YouTube and see how it it will be done properly.

LOL ahahahah You would think they would have that in there manual that comes with the cooler

And I checked the ram stick, yes they are screws but the head of the screw is for an Allen Key not a screw driver like flat head of phillips

but thank you so much man i think i may be able to fit it now

Okay, I still have not put the cooler in, I have decided to stick with the Noctua but I have struck another problem and that is that the motherboard cpu fan pin is a 4 pin connector and the cooler only has 3 pin to 3pin motherboard connectors, what can I do to resolve this?

I tried having a look at some computer sites for a 3pin to 4pin on the motherboard so I can use the CPU Fan on the motherboard instead of using the old 4pin power cable on the power supply but I have been unable to find the cable that does that, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Plug and play. A 3 pin fan can fit in a 4 pin header. You just won't be able to control the fan speeds. The motherboard will automatically control fan speeds through voltage control.

Your D-14 does not have PWM control so using a 3pin to 4pin adapter would do no good anyway.

Ahh okay, thanks for the clearing that up. Well I have it installed but its odd because it idles on 40-43 degrees celsius, and I have applied many applications to try and drop it below using a rice grain and even a dot about 4-5mm

The thermal compounds I am using are as follows, Tri-Linear Ceramic Thermal Compound By Arctic Silver and the Noctua NT-H1. At the moment I am using the Arctic Silver compound.

Also just to note it's hot in the house hold, so have to take that into account, its about 30+ degrees celsius.

Update: I changed the power cable so it is now plugged into the motherboard, so thanks for that.
I also changed thermal compounds from Arctic Silver compound to the Noctua compound. So far I have done a rice grain and its about the same as the Arctic Silver compound.

So is there a type of method i should be using to apply the thermal paste or is that normal temps. keeping in mind the AI OC is set to Auto and the only thing I have set is the RAM to 1600MHz from 1066Mhz.

That's odd, idle should be in the 30s. The 30 degree ambient temperature shouldn't affect the cooling performance by a large amount. I use the pea sized dot method and have had good results. The rice grain should work well... try taking off the cooler and see if the thermal paste has spread around the heatsink giving adequate coverage. Also when placing the heatsink on the CPU try not to move it around and break the seal that was formed.

I left it over night and it is now sitting on 35 degrees Celsius. is that good enough?

Update: Playing Arma 3 it sits around about 41-48 degress celcius.
