I'll be getting a Skylake i5 6500 for what's in the title above, but would I be better with an i5 6600K?

I guess I know what I need for gaming, but my question is, what are good specs for animation/programming?

Is 8GBs of RAM good, or do I need 16GB+ ?

ANY tips would be great, thank you!

UPDATE: This is my current build - http://pcpartpicker.com/p/GMGYVn
Budget is $1000

After seeing the programs he plans on running, I completely agree with you. In this case, an i7 would be best due to hyperthreading, and better multicore performance. Where he doesn't have the money to go with an i7, maybe he could go with a Xeon. most people don't think of it, but for animation and rendering, these things are power houses, and most benchmarks show that they...

This should be probably one of the best builds for this budget, and will ofer you the best performance for animation and gaming, as programming doesn't really take much on a PC. The i5-6600k is your best CPU option at this price point because it offers 4 cores, as well as overclocking capability if you really want to push more out of it. The CM Hyper 212 EVO is a great, cheap cooler that fit in the budget. As for motherboard, you would want a nice Z170 motherboard if you plan on overclocking, and ASUS is probably the best way to go, so that is what I chose. It also has some really nice palstic plating around the i/o and other parts, making it look more pristine. As for RAM, with $1000 budget, it makes good sense to go with 16GB of RAM. It wil help some with animation, but that is about it. If you want, you could down grade to 8GB of RAM and get a 250GB SSD instead for faster load times. That is your choice. FOr the video card, I figured the R9 390 is your best option. It is proven to perform better than the GTX 970 in benchmarks, and it performs much better at higher resolutions. For animation and gaming, you want a really nice GPU, so this is the best way to go. The case, I went with a sleek Phanteks Enthoo Pro M. It is pretty, has a window, and has space for pretty much everything you need, being one of the best mid-tower cases oput there that falls under $80. Lastly, the power supply. I went with a high quality, Tier one EVGA SuperNOVA G2. It is 750 watts, so it has space for upgrades, as well as headroom for overclocking. overall, it should serve you well. I hope this helps, and if you have any questions please let me know. Best of luck!

3D and 4D:
1) Aurora 3D Animation Maker
2) Blender
3) Anime Studio
4) Cinema 4D Studio
5) Autodesk Maya

Most of those programs would love to have an i7 to work with though they will still work on the i5 just slower. You are definitely going to want 16GB of RAM though.
